I receivied an accessories list from Mazda in the mail, and they have a auto-dimming mirror, with compass and outside temperature available. I called the dealer and they want 260 bucks for the part and 150 to install it! Are these available anywhere else or from another manufacturer that I can self-install? I really miss the auto-dimming mirror for when I get blasted with HIDs from behind.

Well, go to google.com and type in mazda accessories, should bring up a few. I think the cheapest that I've seen it has to be at Pacific Mazda for $199.99.
Did you buy your MSP at John Hine? If so, they said that the mirror is $290!

The mirror is really nice, I installed it in less than 30 mins.
You should be able to pick one up for around $200 or less if you shop around.

Thanks guys, when are we going to do a San Diego meet up? I was thinking we could all meet up at the 1/8 mile at the Q on May 23rd. Check out http://www.racelegal.com for more info. I dont plan to race, but just hang out and check out all the crazy modded cars.

How high does the temperature go? I wonder if you could use it for say ... air intake temps ;). That'd be really awesome then! Anyone in aftermarket land listening? I'd pay for something like that, very stealth too.

I found it listed as a B-Series truck accessory, will it fit our Proteges, or am I just looking in the wrong place?

A meet sounds good to me. I would rather tackel Palomar Mnt. then go to a drag race, but when it really comes down to it, I'll go to any place just to meet a few other MSP owners!

Where did you hook up the power for the compass and the dimming?
Did that come w/ the install instructions?

I bet that it hooks into the doom light. I think that I'm going to buy one of these puppies.
Here is an idea for a meet:
June 14 0r 15, Palomar Mt. We can meet off the I-15 and HW-76 by the Nessy Burger and tackel the mountain (both the frontside and backside). Say meet around ten hang out until eleven and then drive to the top and have lunch. Then drive back down. No "hot shot" drivers, go at your own pace. This way we can all have fun and not feel pressured to drive fast.
If you guys are interested, let me know by sending me an email. If I get over three, I'll say its on!
Mirror?? I don't need no stinkin' rear view mirror!! What's behind me matters not. (chair)

Funny - I got the dealer to install the mirror but I believe that it does hook into the dome light because the wire goes into the roof. The dealer said it took almost two hours to install.

Shawn,
Can you tell me how to hook it up (Adam told me that it's got an AMB function and compass) Where does the sensor go to read the outside air?

From what I've seen, the sensor mounts onto the windshield above the mirror base.

After reading all of these posts, I'm glad that my MP5 came with one right from the start!
:D
Having it already on the car was one of the main reasons that I bought it over a used RSX ...

Not to pick on you ... but the main reason you bought your car is because it had an auto-dimming mirror?

I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I knew where the power came from. The local MS dealer probably couldn't figure it out with with both hands, instructions and a flashlight.

Well if there are no instructions, Im just going to run the power off the same place I spliced my V-1 off of. Can just run the power up to the headliner, and down the a-pillar.

People with the Auto-Dimming Mirror in your Protege5. Do you guys have get outrageous temps? For example, today in NYC it was around 70 degrees, but mines read at 96 degrees. Anybody know what the problem could be?

Chojin told me, "From what I've seen, the sensor mounts onto the windshield above the mirror base"
Which I think means not correct temps since it's connected to the winshield instead of some type of intake plumbing, etc to read ambient air temps

It comes with all the wiring necessary to run it down the a-pillar and hook it into the fuse block at the drivers left foot.
It's a pretty sweet setup they give you. Just be careful removing your old mirror, use a long thin screwdriver to unclip your old one and dont apply too much pressure (or else crack....)

They give you all the wiring to run the sensor up all the way to under the front right bumper, so the sensor would work WELL as an intake temp sensor if you mount it into your CAI...

That should be all the mod's I will be doing..
For now... muhahahahahahahaha :D
