One thing Dex...bring a multimeter, check the sub impedence in front of them and save yourself some wait. They're gonna want to check this, that and the other. Chances are they won't have the damn thing in stock and they have to order the whole sub box. My dealer had to order it and it's on back order...that was about 2 weeks ago. Enjoy! I'm not...(argh)
Albert
05-12-2003, 08:14 PM
I know EXACTLY what you're going thru, Dex. Friday, drive to work, sub worked fine. Got out of work, no sub. Took it in today, they "verified" it wasn't working (the amp is getting power and it's sending the signal to the sub). Of course Mazda was closed when they tried to call to get the part, so I have to wait to hear from them tomorrow to see what's up. Wonderful. They better replace the whole damn thing.
Has anyone else taken theirs apart? I took it out, took all the screws out, but the carpeted particle board was glued to the plastic, so I never got to see the sub itself. Has anyone broken the glue out and taken a look inside?

My sub has been dead for about a week now too... I haven't had time to investigate it to see if the amp is getting a signal or not. Every once in a while it will kick on for a couple seconds and then cut off...
I haven't been too worried about it cause it sucks anyway, motivation to put some real bass in there. Kinda strange a lot of peoples seems to be dying though...:wtf:

I dunno what is wrong with mine but this morning on the way to work the damn sub kept cutting in and out, then on the way home tonight it did the same thing. Mine almost seems like there is something loose because once I turn the music up loud it starts up again, like it rattles something back into place. I have not had a chance to look in the trunk yet but I am hoping its something as simple as tightening a screw. what are the chance of luck going my way for once.. I dont really care its still under warranty ;)

I went through this before and brought it up with 1st MP3, who seemed to think that we're all just setting our bass eq boost too high. Seemed logical at the time. But the cutting in and out seems to point to a qc flaw that kenwood missed. I get the feeling that these things are on backorder because kenwood is replacing/testing each and every box, so it may take a bit. Hopefully we'll end up with some good stuff in the end though. I thought they should have put a better quality sub in the trunk, from the beginning!! Oh vell....

You can't pull the shit apart too easily...besides. Why not just spend the money on my intake, or towards snow rims, or something. I'd go with the JL but in a battle between free and 120$...free will always win. Until I'm rich...:D

03SpeedLSD PM'd me with this:
If you pull the grill out, there are 6-8 screws that hold the sub in place. I have taken it out to look at it. It is a SVC sub. Kinda shitty if you ask me...Later
I haven't done it yet (don't want to fuck it up if they're going to replace it) but I will in the future just to see what's inside. I can always get a new grill if I fuck it up.

Ok, this really fuckin blows! I had to call the dealership to find out if they found anything out about what they're doing with my non-working sub. The guy tells me, contrary to what he told me yesterday, that they'll need my car again to do 'further testing' to see if they can find out what the problem is because Mazda told them that there have been no reported problems with the subwoofers so far! :wtf: is that? I told him I'll print out this thread and show him how many people have had trouble with them, and that Mazda knows about it. He gave me the BS about only reading the "corporate" sites and there's nothing on there.
So now I have to decide if I want them to have my car for a day to "test" it more, then have it for another day to install the new one, or just go out and buy a new sub for it. The dealership is not close to my house or my work, so it's a pain in the ass every time I have to go there (not to mention that I dislike that dealership because I had my deposit down there for 4 months and ended up buying the car from a dealer in IL because he had one for me the next damn day).

Damn Albert...your dealership blows! I tested it, told them over the phone, dropped it off to be checked the next day, they verified my results while I was at work, called me around 2:00 and said it's ready, but we have to order the enclosure. It doesn't matter if Mazda knows or doesn't about the problem. It's your car and if it's causing a problem the warranty stands. They should fix it...jackasses!
On a lighter note, I got the call yesterday (after about 1.5 weeks) that my enclosure arrived. Dropping car off sunday night to have work done monday. Wee!!
Also...there's several settings to check. On the amp check your sensitivity. That should not be cranked too high. Make sure LPF if set (it should be). The other setting is the Bass Q on the head. 1st MP3 has noted that it will cause distortion above zero level.
Check here (http://www.msprotege.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17788) to see recommended settings

Well, it took 3 days, but my sound is back to normal. They "determined" that the sub went bad (didn't get any more info than that) and replaced it. Of course, they didn't do that the day they GOT the part, it had to be the next day since I "fell through the cracks" and didn't get worked on.
I can't wait until this new dealership opens closer to my house!
At least it sounds good. My parents could hear me coming down the street!

Well, I have the new sub enclosure in and it's been bugging me because there's been a rattling around that area. Just got done taking the new one out and noticed something. The old contraption had weather stripping on it on the plastic parts that come close to the underside of the trunk - the new one doesn't. That explains the rattling. Weather stripping is like $2.50 at Lowe's, so no need to go back to the dealership for that.
Now my question: Should the amp be set to stereo or mono operation (1st MP3?)? All the other setting I've found in the forums and set them accordingly, but I'm just wondering about this one. They have it set up for bridged output, too, is that correct?
Thanks.
funnylittlman
06-03-2003, 01:25 PM
Wouldn't the sub be a mono setting since there is only one speaker? I think that Mono would have a clearer sound. On really high end theatre equipment they run each channel mono.... now that's awesome sound... a true 7.1 experience! :D

That is not correct Albert I am picking up my new sub today from the dealership. They told me they have had reports of the subs just stopping. I looked around for a sub to replace the stock one but the only JL that would fit is the lower end one and well he told me the kenwood one was just about the same, so I kept that one. I have a JL 12 in the car as well so I guess it doesn't affect me as much.

Just out of curiousity?
How did you guys listen to your music? (type, volume level, settings (pop,Top40,Rock, custom, etc) ) ?
I have noticed w/ mine that if I listen anythign past 21-22, I can hear some distortion in the sub. So that means when the windows are down, I turn the sound settings to flat and then crank it more, if not ... KABOOM!
Albert
06-03-2003, 02:02 PM
I kinda use a combination of the 'recommended' settings from the flier that came with the car and recommended settings I've found on here (keep low, mid, high set to 0, use NF level to adjust bass, etc). Music type is varied, but lately it's been a lot of Tool, Ill Nino, They Might Be Giants, and of course howard Stern in the morning (he's got so much bass in his voice it's scary!). EQ settings set to flat.

my settings were usually on that stupid Pop setting and the radio was on default EQ settings since i kept resetting my radio like 540 times when i was installing my turbo timer. i just finally added presets like 2 weeks ago.
i havent ever heard distortion on my system until about 28 or so. its been awhile tho since ive had a sub to play with.
