View Full Version : Turbo timer install question(professional or do it yourself?)
im looking into gettin a greddy turbo timer(as many of you already have)
I just have a few quwstions to ask you guys:
I was wodering how did you guys install it?
Professional or do it yourself?
Where did the wires go?
Did you use a special wiring harness/ or did you have to splice it in(Greddy advertises pre-made harness jumpers)
Also, silver or black?
Thanks a lot for the help guys!!!

There is a bunch of threads that deal with this... Just do a search and You will find detailed instructions.
I did mine myself as most everyone on this board has and it was very easy.

Eddy do a search you will find lots of info on it http://www.msprotege.com/vbb225/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=105245&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending
here is just one of the many install guides, its for a Blitz but I think the wiring is the same
http://church56.tripod.com/blitz.html
I think most people did it themselves, as far as I know there is no wiring harness that works on the protege yet, silver or black depends on where your putting it and your preference, I like the silver one
hope that helps :)

i did it myself...my alarm system got fucked up somehow during th install...but resetting it a couple times...pulling it out...fucking with the door locks...and etc etc...finally got it working perfectly.i picked the hks type 1 cuz it has cool timing shit on it. black. no harness, cuz they dont make em for our car, but its easy 3 wires anyways.
red = constant 12v
black/white = accessory
blue = ignition
watch out tho, there are 2 blues on the harness, one supplies 12v during start key position and one does not

Um, I did this install myself the other night (blitz DCII)
I used the red, blue and white/black wires as indicated by walkthough here (http://church56.tripod.com/blitz.html). It shows boost just fine, but the timer function doesn't seem to work.
Wondering what I might have done wrong.
Looking at the wiring setup, I tapped these wires:
x x
white/black) X X (blue)
x X (red)
Which appear to be those dictated by the instructions, yet the timer doesn't work?

Ok, if your looking at the ignition harness, you will see the wires as follows:
(Blue) | (Black/Yellow)
(Black/White) | (Blue)
(Red)| (Red)
I used the following wires:
(Blue) | (Black/Yellow)
(Black/White) | (Blue)
(Red)| (Red)
A couple things to ask you:
1) do you leave your car in gear when you park?
2) did you hook up the e-brake wire?
3) do you set your e-brake when you park?
If you hooked up the e-brake wire, then you must set the e-brake for the turbo timer to work...you will also not want to leave the car in gear when you shut the car off. If you hooked up the e-brake wire and do not use your e-brake when you park, the the timer will just shut off when you turn the ignition off.
Other than that, I would double check your wiring and make sure all of the connections are good and in the correct place.
Good luck

Yeah, those are definitely the wires I used. I'll just have to check to make sure they are all solid. If i have power, but no timing, which of the 3 would likely be the culprit?
Re: Ebrake wire - I hadn't run that connection yet, I wasn't sure where exactly to look. I did notice a wire coming up out of the floor under the driver's seat that ran over to the center console back by the ebrake, but I didn't expect to see it there - is that it? If not, wtf IS it?
lol

The e-brake wire can be found under the e-brake handle area. If you remove (gently pull) the plastic moulding around the e-brake handle, you can see the wire (may be tucked under the carpet)...that is the wire you use for the e-brake connection.
As far as the wire under the driver's seat....dunno? Maybe it's for the seat belt light? Not sure.
Next question for you is...does the turbo timer count down while the car is turned off, or does it just shut off and not count down? If it counts down, but the engine shuts off, then I would double check the connections, and if they are ok, I would try the other blue wire (though I know no one else who has used this one). Other than that, mabye you have a faulty turbo timer?
Hope this helps some.
Peace

hm - no it doesn't count down at all. Screen flashes red and then shuts off as I recall.
I'd hate to hear the timer was defective though - its an ebay find.

I would hook up the e-brake wire and see if that helps at all (it shouldn't make a difference though). Now using a multi-meter or an airbag friendly test light, check to see if you are getting 12v when you turn the key off for the red wire you are tapping into, also check the voltage on the blue wire to make sure you get 12v in the "ACC", "ON" and "START" positions of the iginition.
If all of that checks out ok, and your connections are in fact good, than I would say you could possibly have a faulty turbo timer...but don't take my word for gold, cause I have no way to physically look at your set-up.
Good luck.

Here's a thought....make sure your settings on the timer its self are correct. I'm not sure, but I believe there is a setting for the timer function to be turned off....maybe your timer is just turned off? It's worth a shot.

hmmm....
yeah, I prob should check on that - I don't have a manual for it though. I'll have to try to track one down online somewhere.

Hook up that e brake wire. That is the problem. If I turn my car off with the e brake not engaged, it will flash red and turn off as you described. It is a simple wire tap, that won't be hard.:)

It is a simple wire tap, but i dont' think that's his problem. The way the e-brake wire works is this: If the wire senses a 12v signal, it will shut off the timer and car. The only time that wire feeds 12v is when the e-brake is disengages...soo if the e-brake wire is disconnected, it will never see 12v and therefore that would not shut off the timer/car.

I also have a question. Sometimes mine will just shut off the engine but it will count down everything else (my stereo, windows, etc.) . If i rev the engine to 1,000 rpm and then shut the car off it will keep the engine running and countdown. It actually sounds like it turns off for a millisecond then turns back on. It's really weird? Does anyone have any idea? BTW I have the HKS type 0.

I haven't hooked up the ebrake wire yet - I thought that it would operate correctly without it, you just wouldn't have the added safety of the ebrake cutoff?

Theoretically, you are correct, but it's a simple hook-up, and I would try it out and see if it fixes anything....you never know with these new-fangled contraptions.

Just curious, would the car shut off if you were driving and used the e-brake at high speeds to slide the car (like in the movie, fast and furious)? lol

If this is a serious question... umm no. The whole ebrake shut off is only active when the car is on countdown, if you wired it in. Also, if you wired the speed sensor up as well, the car will shut off if it detects the car is moving.
So if this was a joke, disregard the above.
