What exactly would be the difference between the two that would cause one to throw the CEL and not the other? Why would either throw a CEL unless you left something unhooked after the install??

the only reason it would through a cell is if someone f***ed the install
like the MAF sensor, or the other valve do-dad you have to move

I have the AEM short ram, installed it myself in 15 minutes and I never had any problem with it. The only time I light the Check Engine Light is when I was installing my APEXi S-AFC which I never got it to work. But when I remove it and drive for about 15 miles the Light turns itself off.... I guess my ECU resolve the problem itself...
I hope I helped you out a little...

I bought one of those autozone cone filters for $20 about a year ago. A couple weeks ago I looked under my hood and guess what! the thing just fell off (not where I hooked it on, but the actual filter to the rest of the filter). Knowing that it could have completely ruined my engine, I wasn't too happy about that.
Anyways... I was messing with the sensors today and while I was driving, the check engine light came on... I found out it was because I didn't reconnect the wires properly. I messed with it a few times and the light finally turned off.
In conclusion... well.. I guess I had no real point, just wanted to blabber on.
