I got an orange msp about a month ago and i love it to death. There is only one thing i don't like, that is that the exhaust is to quite. Does any one know if its a silencer that can be removed or any other reason for such a quite exhaust. Some times i dont even know if the car is on or not. Is a new exhaust the answer? If so what kind?

I totally agree that the MSP is too quiet, anyone who has done some exhaust on this thing put out some info .I also agree with you murdock ,no rice cans but god this car needs to have a nice deep throaty sound!;)

should of bought a tight compression 71 vette with a big block 454 and side pipes if you want loud. remember Jr, this is a 4 door grocery getter with a couple performance goodies. not some fuckin little shitbox civic with a raspy rice exhaust that sounds like it has holes drilled in the muffler for a nice tinty metalic twang sound to it.

If its anything like the regular protege. You can just take off the muffler and itll have a really nice sound. But that will look ghetto.. hahahha

I have a custom JIC exhaust. It added nice sound, no rice sound, no horrible rasp, and to top that off it looks damn good. Notice an good increase in performance. The car seems to take to mods very well, the only thing that was bad at first was BOV, as it had a rough idle and stalled a little. But after changing the plastic to alum pipes and re-installed the BOV it was fine. Not sure if any of that helps but there you go.

You have to remember that this isn't a naturally aspirated car. When you put on a turbo it has a muffling effect. Hence the reason why the new SRT-4 doesn't even have a muffler. If you go onto flyin' miata you can see that there are systems for NA and Turbo, the difference being the extent to which the exhaust gases are muffled

Let me shed some light for you exhaust virgins, First take off the muffler section and see if it's the performance you want and the sound that you want. For the people who want the most bang for your buck take the cat back section off (I did today to experiment, and it's f-ing loud and mean) you won't regret it. plus you keep the miles down on the stock shit. If you wan't real performance for $0.00 just hollow out the secondary cat. (will pass emissions via OBD2 and no check engine light won't come on cause cat efficency is not monitored on the rear cat. HAPPY RACING for
$0.00

RX-KEVIN I just posted about my BOV you think you can answer my question in that post? Im wondering if my BOV will work on the stock piping, if not on the stock boost what about on the higher boost, its so weird that people are having problems it just seems that a BOV should work. Thanks

I agree and It does just work but unfortunately I can't think of any way the stock IC piping will work

if you want a louder exhaust, and want to keep a small diameter tip the JIC Sus 505 is a good system for you.
the tip is only about 3 inches "pretty small in the world of exhaust" but its 2.5" piping from the 2nd cat back.
now if somebody near me or near the shop that has a mazdaspeed wants to do some testing to see if the JIC will bolt up to the mazdaspeed please PM me or ARD_MP5

true, but apparently i don't know what the hell i'm talking about, ever. i must be the most clueless one on here when it comes to turbo cars since i've never been around them before or own one or more myself. maybe i should go back to my corner and let the ricers rule the world.
more people should go around without their exhausts off:rolleyes: talk about top of the line half assed ways of doing things. but hey, if it rubs ya the right way then go right on ahead. it is your car.make sure you get one of those non-functional F&F roof scoops as well

I had the muffler removed, but since then I removed the cat back section, and it pulls harder than ever. Yeah it's loud but Ive heard louder from plenty other cars, and no it's not loud enough to get a repair ticket, I have cruised next to cops a couple of times.

does the muffler just bolt on and off? i need to try it if its easy to get back on

dude it's simple two 14mm nuts and two rubber hangers. the only hang up is the pipe will hang if you don't come up with some way to support it, use your imagination for a way to hold it up

twiztedjeckel
04-10-2003, 01:12 PM
i seriously hope you're not talking to me. when did i show concerns for taking off my exhaust? i'm not the one who wants a louder one. if i did i'd just do the normal thing and spend money for one.
i will say that i'm going to have to disagree with you on the tuner/shit talker thing. you seem like a friggen half wit and a tinkerer to me not a tuner. who goes around taking their exhaust off? thats like the guy in the group buy/for sale section telling me that 99% of the people he knows with body kits take them off when the weather gets bad. who the hell takes a body kit off there car for winter where do you people come up with this crap?????
one more quick thing, did anybody ever say anything about your car being slow or that somebody else's was faster? you may as have pulled out the old "my dad will beat up your dad" argument from 2nd grade. jesus dude, grow up.

Yes custom, I had a shop fab up piping from the cat back. And the DBC R it is great. What do you think.
Originally posted byRx-kevin Bet it's faster than the JIC custom
That hurt. (nuts) Just kidding (upyours) Really you like the sound of no muffler? I though it was to harsh as I ran it for a couple days while the exhuast shop was matching the pipes. And yes does have little more "kick" but not very much.

its all good. i may come off a bit harsh and i realize that but when somebody comes on and starts spouting off about being a tuner because he can unbolt a muffler from a car, then there's something wrong there.
Dave-i don't remember having any beef with you. not sure where that came from but ok(drinks)

Take off the exhaust from the turbo back. It sounds mean and gives mad flow. It also saves a ton of weight. Another good tip is take off all the air intake BS and run the turbo without a filter, this is how my boys run them in Yapan. Just ignore the OBD II shit with the check engine light.
If you suck something up in the turbo we can over night some parts from Yapan.

It's not very hard to do, with a stand alone ECU, Wideband and something to datalog the info.

and the 99 was way better than the 89. are you actually getting somewhere with this or are you in a circle jerk here and yet you're the only one there?
what am i trying to do? you asked a question and weren't specific about it so i answered. i figured there weren't many other people on here or ones checking out this thread for that matter that had any kind of Rotary much less an FC.

There's the Haltech, Microtech, AEM, TEC III and the A'PEXi Power FC are all pretty good choices.
The Power FC and new Haltech control the OMP.
The Microtech has a nice pricetag.
Lots of them can be had in plug and play format, which will save some time.
But you might want to replace all the wiring anyways, due to the age and condition.

I favor the early ones myself. While the updated tail lights, body side molding, wheels and turbo/wastegate are improved on the V, I like the IV better because the OMP is not electric, the engine compression was lower and the cars weigh less.

whats wrong? dude i thought you were a tuner. you should be able to make some serious cash doing that stuff especially for the rotary community. i'll have some of the guys from the RX-7 club email you and you can tell them how to take an exhaust off. rotaries are very tuner friendly. i bet your S5 smiles at you and winks each time you walk past it doesn't it?

anyways, to the exhaust point, i do agree with twisted, take of the exhaust?!?!?!? um.. NO. I'll go out and buy me a exhaust with the same sound, hallow out the second cat... NO, i'll buy a cat test pipe. It's not about taking parts off its about replacing them with better proformance parts but onces agian its your car, do as you wish :) Thats like taking the easy way out and heating the springs or cutting the springs becuz you dont wanna buy them, and in the end you end up doing more damage to your car than you would have if you just waited saved the money and baught the right stuff.
