Went to my first dry autox, ran the OEM Bridgestones and crushed the competition in Street Tire class. It's gotta be the Mazdaspeed, guys, cause I'm only a mid-pack driver usually.

Here's how the times shook out:
Mazdaspeed Protege: 36.616
Nissan Spec V: 37.368
That's three quarters of a second, a huge lead in autox!!!
8 other cars were slower yet.
A couple of Miatas were slightly quicker on raw times (0.5 sec), but not enough to overcome the larger CS pax modifier.

Other interesting times:
Mini Cooper S on R compound tires: 37.057
Subaru WRX on R compound tires: 36.3xx

I ran tire pressures of 38F/35R and that was about right for this surface (asphalt). And I know I left a good half second out on that course through my mistakes. This is only my second autox in a front driver.

Mine was the only Mazdaspeed there, but I sure attracted a lot of attention. Lots of people noticed how composed the car was and how easy it was to put the power down coming out of the turns. I can imagine how much quicker the car would be on Falken Azenis tires. Two more autox events this coming weekend with my local club. Looking forward to that!

PS: Yes, I LOVE my Mazdaspeed! :D :D :D

There's NO comparison....

The Re040s are complete CRAP next to the Falkens! Get yourself a set, and you'll probably be able to stick with faster STX cars, and really run away with street tire ;) The only problem is a bit of rubbing...

Falkens are not AS good on a track because they tend to get greasy when they're hot. That said, they'll still be better than the stock 040s out there.... :)

Sunday, I went to my first auto-x. I did very well. I was the proud owner of a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R spec V. Yesterday (Monday) I went to the Mazda dealer and traded it for a black MS Protege. Best automotive decision of my life.

Where in Hampton Roads? I used to live in Va Beach, around the Pembroke area...

There's a good autox club in the area: Tidewater Sports Car Club. They run events at Little Creek these days: they have a BIG flat expanse of concrete to play with, I'm told...

depends on what class you want to run in. if you want to run in STX, then yes, Azenis. if you want to run in stock class (where typically, you can also mod cat-back exhaust and shocks), treat your MSP right and get some R-compound tires.
