I picked up a flyer for this thing at the San Jose Auto Show when I went and had forgotten about it till I saw this thread, so I dug out the stack of stuff that I picked up, threw most of it away and found the card.
On the postcard it states that for $50 and early registration you'll get classroom time and driving instruction as well as your own time on the track, sounds reasonable to me. There is also a free aspect to it, but just not the instruction.
I am signed up for info on the San Francisco event. Guess I'll have to finally make it out to an autocross event sometime soon, haven't been to one yet, but have plans too.
