Hey guys....
I just finished cleaning my rims inside and out. I'm currently on winter tires so that's where i got the opportunate to clean them. After i cleaned all 4 wheels, i decided to weigh them...
Anyone can guess how much these suckers weigh???
*drum roll please*
Try 43-44lbs each wheel! (omg)

How much do your tires way, because I know my khumos way 18 -19 pounds alone.
no big surprise there. The MP3's rims were around 23-25 pounds without tires.
But, the bridgestones must way a bit as well. That is heavey.

15 pounds or so for a nice forged racing wheel in a 17"x7" size.

I'd say more like, 1 lb per inch, would still be acceptable as light weight, ie, 16" weigh 16lbs

i think my 17" forged SSR integrals are about 40lbs with the 215/45 toyo T1S rubber on em

Its hard enough to find 17 lbs 17in, never mind anything under that. I feel 17 - 20 lbs 17,s are good.

How all of that unsprung weight impacts your acceleration, braking, and handling? Better start looking (and saving) for some forged wheels. Jim

that would be funny to start seeing people riding on 15" black racing fored rims just to reduce the weigh....

the Volk TR-37's seem to be the most popular lightest weight racing wheel. i think most of their 17xwhatever sizes are around 14lbs each. the SSR's are known to be pretty light for their sizes as well. but out wheels are not that light. that much i found out when i was swapping them out last weekend. thought i was going to pull a nut carrying them

Looked up the weight of the Bridgestone RE040 tires in our 215/45x17 size: 22 lbs each.
That means each Racing Hart (made by Enkei) weighs about 21 to 22 lbs!
Most of the aftermarket wheels I've been looking at are running 16 to 17 lbs, which means I'm only saving about 5 lbs per wheel, or a little over 10%. And the prices go up steeply with each pound under that.
That's a lot of money for only a little improvement. Maybe I'll run street tires for my first autox season and not worry about trophies!

But remember, 1 lb of unsprung weight is equivalent to many more pounds removed somewhere else (I think I saw a 1:5 ratio on some website).
So the best thing you can do is go lighter wheels. I am having the same trouble with my MP3. Fortunately, I do not have to use stock size wheels to stay in stock class and can go down to 16s or 15s

Checked out the Kumho Ecsta V700 specs. They only come in these sizes which aren't exact match to our stock ones:
225/45R17 Section width = 8.9 in weigh 23.3 lbs
205/40R17 Section width = 8.3 in weigh 19.2 lbs.
Also Hoosier 225/45R17 Section width = 9.5 no weight shown on web site.
So, anyone know if the 225/45R17 tires will fit under our cars without rubbing? Assume a 17 x 7 in wheel with 50 offset. (Better 17 x 7.5 wheels available, but that kicks you out of stock)
srew it, save your money, go on a diet, and loose 20 pounds
Same thing
Seriously, I am joking , but I get a kick out of some people worry about their wheels being 4-5 lbs too heavey, then you look at them, and they way 250 pounds! Funny shit

Hi,
I just thought the +43lbs. measured weight can't be only the wheel plus tire weights...
I believe the air pressure should add something also, just as a scuba tank weights a lot more filled than empty.
I know 32 PSI may not be much to add a lot of weight, but I still believe it helps a little.
Has somebody measured the wheel/tire combo inflated vs. deflated ???

I doubt it, since no matter how badly you want to save weight, deflating your tires won't improve on your acceleration. :D Makes handling pretty sloppy too.

MSP Pro-
I've been told you can't run the Hoosiers unless you have 2deg or more camber, so that won't work on the proteges in stock setup. The Kuhmos are nice, but I've been told 225's won't fit, and if they do, look for something in a 40 or smaller profile as the 225/45 will be a bit tall.
I run 215/40/17 Kuhmos for AX and they are great. The MP3 whel weight is 24.5lbs, but the ASAs I use are only 19.4, so it drops a few pounds, and with the grip and weight reductions, it makes a huge difference on the course.

cjstringer:
yeah, I've been told the Hoosiers like lots of negative camber, too. Have you been able to get alignment specs on our MSPs? How are they set up from the factory? What about crash bolts availability?
Yeah, the 205/40x17 were 877 revs/mi, while the 225/45x17 were 835, much taller. What offset did your ASA JS1 wheels come with? How do you like them? Tire Rack? I noticed the Indiana location!

oh well, they [the racingharts] look good and the car is still damn good...
Hey - you can get plenty of grip from 15's or 16's, and they "arguably" drive better in some situations. The slight additional sidewall flex can absorb more road variations and keep the rubber on the road. The higher sidewall allows more "slip angle" and a more progressive breakaway - again, important in some situations and many "road" (not "track") situations. Higher sidewalls (-1 or -2 to the Racing Hart 17's) can actually be MORE fun to drive from behind the wheel, leaving alone that they look, well, not as good.
Rotating weight is worth a multiple of static weight, how much depends on speed. 5 lb per corner is a lot - greater than 10%. It'd definitely be noticable, all other things being equal...
...but there's the rub: Usually when someone changes from one wheel to another (or one wheel size to another) they change tire brands or styles as well, making direct comparisons useless (was it the weight reduction? Or the new rubber replacing them bald ol' bubbled, feathered and cords-out skins?)
If you're competing, it makes a difference. Lets face it , for many of us it's the look we're after. For some it's both. Best part is, it's enjoyable for all of us (that's why we're here - actually that's why many of us AREN'T here, we're out enjoying a good drive...!)
