2009 Mazda5
Well, I don't know enough about my 2009 Mazda5 (and it isn't w/ me to look) but I know I need to replace either the rear shocks or struts soon. I had a light oil leaking onto my driveway from under the driver-rear side. And now, the clunk I hear while driving confirms it needs replaced. Can anyone tell me which of these I need to get? I called AutoZone and Napa Auto and they say there are no 'rear struts' in their system for Mazda 5's, that I'll have to go to the dealer. PLEASE HELP!!! :(

Get your search on... many threads on this forum about replacement/issues/DIY/Brands etc, etc... to clear a couple things up for you... there are no struts on the rear, just shocks, the OEM's are crap, buy aftermarket, the good thing is that they are cheap and if you're at all handy, have some tools, jackstands and maybe a garage are fairly simple to swap out yourself. While your at it you may want to have a look at your rear sway bar bushings... usually need changing by the time a shock goes, also very cheap and easy to DIY... also many threads on this forum. Have fun!

Someone recently posted that Koni and two other brands were the only non-OEM available. Look through this forum for the thread.

Anybody try Volvo V50 Bilstein? Koni is nice but they fade and need to be rebuild from time to time.

Here is 07 V50 rear suspension diagram with self leveling. I could not find the one without self leveling suspension.

No mention of Mazda, but many Volvo and Focus parts do fit the Mazda 3.
Really should be looking at the heavier duty Mazdaspeed 3 shocks due to the extra weight the 5's have over the stock 3 at the rear. (~600lb extra)

Bilstein makes shocks for the 3, 6, Miata, and RX8. If you look up V50 and MS3, they share the same part# for *some shocks (HD and Sport line) but each also had a listing for a different pair.. Not sure why it is listed this way. The V50 and M5 are similar in weight, M5 weighing ~150 more lbs. So if the shocks between the MS3 and M5 are interchangeable and shocks between the MS3 and V50 are interchangeable, does this mean V50 shocks work on a M5 (A=B, B=C, does A=C?)? I highly advocae Bilsteins as well but the front pair seem really expensive.

Complied this from Bilstein's website...
See anything strange?? (squinty)

In theory all of these parts should be interchangable, but they are not listed...

They should be similar in price to the Koni sports online.
The Mazdaspeed3 parts fit the 5. In the Koni world, the sports have the same part numbers for the MS3 and the M5.
The parts have to be the same for a direct fit regardless of manufacturer, so with that logic the MS3 parts should be the ones to use for the M5.

mazda5 struts and shocks are 100% swapable with the mazda3 and mazdaspeed3. part numbers can be different if the valveing is different. the mountable parts can be 100% the same, but if the damper is valved different it will carry a different part number.

speed3 struts are more firm compared to the mazda5 struts.

My car seems to have bad shock since it was new. I could always feel the car wiggle a lot at highway speed. I need to make some time get it check at the dealer. Once the warranty expired I might take the plunge to get Bilstein for this car.

I looked into the V50 Bilsteins but didn't get all the way to actually compare them side by side. I am now thinking about the Koni FSDs although I have really liked Bilsteins on my other vehicles.

The KYBs are attractive from a price point but I had them on another car and they rode very stiff, not highly damped like Bilsteins but just stiff. It's a characteristic of a twin tube shock design.

i'm waiting for ours to go out again, and they will be getting replaced with koni's. we've had both rear dampers replaced twice already, and the car doesnt even have 50,000 miles on it yet.

To the OP: Are you still under 36k miles? The dealer replaced my blown shock under warranty. Still the crappy OEM, but free.
