Yes, it gives you a downward view of your bumper so you can see when it approaches something. Similar to the mirrors you see on mail delivery trucks, though they have to see them through their side mirrors as they don't have rear view mirrors.

In case anyone else is interested, Amazon has the same mirror for $22 with free s/h if over $25.

And you're halfway to the cost of one of these - http://www.amazon.com/PLCM36-Universal-Monitor-License-Rearview/dp/B0037WNONS/ref=sr_1_22?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1305841515&sr=1-22
I'd go for the camera. Hard to see at night through my tint especially when it's raining.

I prefer things mechanical and had a particular look in mind. I really wanted the VIP spoiler and mount this mirror upside down on passenger side (would prefer a round mirror). But, it looks like the spoiler does not fit my car :(
Looks like I have to go camera. Anyone tried the cheap one? I would prefer a more integrated solution but hard to argue against the almighty dollar.

If you get a decent camera, you will not regret it. Mine cost about $500 w/o installation but its as close to OEM as possible and I use it every time I drive. IMHO its the best money I've ever invested into a car. The rear view at night is not to be believed, its looks like daytime.
