View Full Version : 60k Tune-Up/My problems.

So, I have a 2003 Protege ES and I was wondering as to what would be included in a 60k mile tune-up. Because I have an entire turbo kit I want to install, but I want my Pro in good running condition.

It has had a faint ticking sound for the past month or so. I can't exactly describe the sound. I don't know if it's a belt, or if it's the exhaust because when I searched it I kept getting results of the exhaust possibly being loose, or a bad gasket.

And as of late, my stick shift won't always go into first, I have to push in the clutch while I am rolling up to a red light and wait for it to go into gear while I am slowly rolling. Getting into second is not nearly as bad, but still takes some effort, third is growing increasingly difficult and kind of twitches when I go into gear. As for 4th and 5th I have no issue. I don't know if it is a tranny issue, a clutch issue or both.

And when shifting out of gear above 3500/4000 rpms, my clutch has some resistance when I push it in.

So, these are my problems. And until they are solved I don't plan on putting in my turbo.

On a side note, if anyone has a stock intake for an 03 Pro they would be willing to give to me, I'd be more then happy. I have to send my CAI to the guy I bought the turbo from.

Ticking sound could mean that your valves need adjusting.

The synchros won't let you put the stick in 1st gear if the car is still rolling, that's normal (it'll go in, but you really have to push it in hard, possibly breaking them).

The twitching is possibly a broken motor mount or two. It could even be chattering. it all depends on what the twitching really feels like.

And honestly, I can't really think of why the clutch would resist while shifting. I can't see why your pressure plate would go bad on you at 60k miles. That's weird.

might want to try to change your trans oil to fix that shifting problem
60k is pretty much brand new compared to mine lol

ticking sound could just be the lifters, mine make some noise too but they have always made noise

Well, I only shift into first right before I come to a complete stop. But If I come to a complete stop then try it, 50% of the time it won't go into 1st and I have to start in 2nd.

As for the twitch, it's more of a slight movement. Like a shake of sorts. And it only happens when I am letting the clutch out.

As for the tranny fluid, it's on my to-do list really soon.

The noise isn't a real scare for me, but it has been keeping me from installing my turbo. Because I don't want to put it in and find out it was a problem I should have dealt with beforehand.

I just think the previous owner was extremely hard on the car.

IMO, I just wouldn't try to put the car in first gear while still rolling, regardless if you keep your foot on the clutch. It's not good for the synchros. If you like downshifting on red lights, keep it to a minimum and don't put it first - go to neutral instead.

If the twitch is happening when you're letting out the clutch, then it sounds like it's chattering to me. The only way of fixing that is by taking the flywheel out and resurfacing it (or buy a new light flywheel and upgraded clutch since you're already doing the work). This happens when you burn the clutch and so the flywheel gets heat spots and/or warps, thus not letting the clutch grab correctly. Since it's not grabbing correctly, it skips and makes the engine and car "twitch".

that can happen at speed though? i thought that only happens when you are at a stop and start going

my clutch chatters really bad in reverse but when im driving forward its perfect

BTW, you might wanna fix that chattering problem before going turbo. It's just gonna get worse because I can guarantee you'll start to break some motor mounts. That's just gonna add to your wheel-hop when you try and take off the line in a race.

I thought it was when you're letting the clutch out? I assumed to move forward. If it's only happening in reverse then it could be that your front motor mount is bad.

Hey, since I started this thread and it's already up...

Can anyone point me in the direction of A/C Removal How-To?

I have looked, but it is to no avail.

My bad. I never checked the how-to in 3rd gen. I went straight to the how-to forums. Thanks.
