So I have a 02 Mazda Protege. It's got about 92,000 mi and it's never had any problems until now. Here are the events leading up to my current problem...

- A few months ago I drove my car from Georgia to Oregon for a big move. Right before the trip I got an extensive tune up (new tires, new brakes, engine tune up, fluid flushes, oil change, etc). Everything went fine, no car problems over the course of the trip.

- A few weeks after I arrive in Oregon, my car starts overheating when I drive it. I take out the thermostat and it no longer overheats, so I determine that the thermostat is bad and I replace it. The overheating problem is solved.

- One problem remains. My car will start but it will not idle when the engine is cold. If it's the first time of the day that I'm using my car, I must start it and keep my foot on the gas until the engine heats up. Only then will it idle when I take my foot off the gas. The car drives fine once it idles properly.

- I took my car to a Mazda dealership and they told me one of the battery cells was bad. They replaced my battery with a new one and told me the problem was fixed.

- The problem was not fixed. My car still won't idle with a cold engine but it idles and runs fine once the engine is warm.

ANY IDEAS???

IACV or EGR sticking when cold? That's probably what I'd suspect... both cases would require cleaning and/or replacement.

I don't know how anyone could come to the conclusion that it was the battery. If it doesn't start, that's the battery. If it doesn't idle, it's something else.
