I've had this car for about 3 months. It has 130k miles (good condition, just some hail damage), I change the oil regularly, everythings been working great.

The other day, while driving on the highway for quite some time, I came to a stop light after taking an exit, proceeded to make the turn, and noticed my steering had stiffened (I must go back, the ONLY issue I've had has been a few times where, typically, just starting the car the engine made a squeel and I lost power steering for about 10 seconds), anyway that happened, and it came back just fine. A few feet later I look at my gauges and the Temp is at 3/4! I pull over into a parking lot near a grocery store, got some water just in case, came back, the Reservoir was practically boiling over, being a dumbass I got a rag and opened up the Rad Cap, only to have boiling hot coolant gusher all over the engine (luckily not me). With the heat going on max/outside air I was able to drive home under 2k RPM's without it going over that 3/4 mark. (Dont wanna blow a gasket, if it hasn't already happened).

Mechanics ran a pressure check and a small diagnostics, said that 1 of the 2 (The one on the left facing the engine) wasn't working and that was probably the issue. He also noted that the hoses seemed original and some "O" ring, near the top where the rad hose is at was leaking some oil, and had swollened the rad hose. (But apparently no collapse I guess). They claimed the issue was probably the fan, and AFTER replacing the fan we'd see. They also wanted to charge 230$ for that alone, so I said no.

I only got about 5-10 minutes from the shop until it overheated again, fairly quickly, rocketed to the H.

Any ideas? It's quite puzzeling, and I got the car for pretty cheap (2500) and I wanted to keep it that way, don't want to throw money at it to "eliminate" variables, I just want it fixed! Thank you.

Well after browsing these forums, as quite a few other Protege owners noted, the thermostat was out! I live in an apartment complex and therefor can't do it myself, but since I knew what the problem was (or I hoped) I talked the mechanic down from 140 to 100$ flat.
