Well I've finally had the first major problem with my 03 Protege. I don't drive it much, so I've been ignoring the squeaking serpentine belt. Apparently it shredded itself, which stopped the water pump, which cracked the radiator. The crack is right where the upper hose comes in.
So I got the belt on, and my mechanic friend is telling me that I should just let the crack dry and then put some JB Weld on it, let it cure and that should handle it. Anybody see a problem with doing that? If it doesn't work, I guess I'll be needing a new radiator.

It may not last forever, but it should work in the short term. Just keep an eye on it to make sure its not leaking. Only problem JB weld usually has is withstanding high temps.

jb weld sucks
quiksteel is amazing :) i use it on anything lol
in all seriousness, it might hold for some time, depenfing on how well it sticks to the surface, given that its a smooth surface and plastic, i doubt it

I would score the surface with some sandpaper first. And clean the surface with alcohol before applying the JB Weld ( or whatever comparable product you wish to use) of course.

At this point I'm thinking what's the harm in trying, right? If it doesn't work I'm in the same spot I am now. Minus the $5 for the JB Weld (or the Quicksteel)
I'm also thinking about pulling the whole radiator out just to look for other leaks, just in case. I don't really have any indication that there are any but I'm nervous. Worth the hassle, or should I just wait and see if the JB weld works first?

Either way, JB weld and these types of products are not typically long term solutions. I would recommend that you JB Weld it and Start sourcing a new radiator at the same time. By the time you find a good deal on a new/used radiator the JB Weld will probably be going out.
Peace of mind is priceless. :)

Oh I'm definitely keeping my eyes open. My buddy put me onto RadiatorBarn.com, says they come highly recommended, plus they're literally 15 minutes away from me. $100. That seems to be in line with the other prices I'm seeing.
I think that's what I'll end up doing, JB weld it for now just to get it into running condition again and get the new radiator in a little bit.
