I am wondering what the Code PO117 --- what exactly is this
Coolant Temperature CKT Low Input...

I know that there is a sensor and that according to the mechanic at pep boys, it or the thermometor could be bad.

I am wondering first if the codes that are read on the car are all currently occurring problems when they are being read or if perhaps they just might be past problems that have occurred...

I ask this because last September I had front end damage and had my car repaired at a local body shop attached to a Chevy dealer... A big mistake... horrible service.

There was a leak at the accident scene of coolant which I had reported to my insurance agent but the repair people did not want to touch it to check it... They sent me off with a cracked radiator with no fluid in it.
It instantly overheated. I took it to a local shop and they put coolant in it and for awhile it was okay but then it reheated again.
I was told that a had a bad thermometer.
That was replaced.
I ended up going to work one morning and having it towed to back to the repair shop and they put in a new radiator and fluid.
They swore that the problem was fixed.

Recently my engine light went on and there were two codes, the P0300 misfiring cylinders dealt with in another post and this P0117 code.
I have been smelling some sweet smells but see no leaks... did have a problem once of what looked to be too much coolant going out of the overflow area as another local mechanic, seeing the close to empty reserve area, filled it but did not think to check the radiator which had more than enough coolant in it.

I was worried about head gaskets but that does not seem to be an issue as the oil that was changed last month still looks good and as there is no white smoke seen.

I am doubting the thermometer is the culpret as it appears to be functioning properly... the needle is down when the engine is cold and hovers always at the middle point when it is warm and moving.

I have a serpantine belt which someone replaced and recently adjusted to reduce noise which still has at times been making squealing noises when the car is cold.... I have been told that this does not have anything to do with the code but want to make sure.

I am really wanting to know if my car is safe to drive until I can afford to have it looked at perhaps next month or the month after (would ideally prefer it to be fixed the 12th of never) The mechanic said to check to see if the temperature gauge needle goes up as that would indicate over heating but... does that work with a bad thermometer?

If it is the sensor will that work?

I am confused... help...

Wondering what you think from reading this and if you have any ideas or suggestions...

Recommendations for fixes, especially inexpensive ones, are welcome...

I am hoping that this is an inexpensive problem that I can put of taking care of... as I will not be able to take care of until two months from now.

It's possible that it was a pending code before, and wasn't cleared out before. Depends where he pulled the code from. pending, or current.

IDK what a thermometer is. I know what a thermostat is, and the temp sensor. sensor could be bad, or going bad. keep an eye on your gauge reading. if it goes above the normal line you're used to seeing, take it to the place that "fixed" it before and make them re-do it. There's no reason the thermostat could be bad again, except possibly faulty parts.. which isn't your issue. If it's the sensor, that's easy to fix. something you could do yourself with the right tools.

it's safe to drive on, assuming that it's not going crazy above your normal operational temperatures.

good luck
