Just thought I would let everyone know of recent problems I have had fixed recently.
The first was cracks in the top of the lift gate. When I took it in to them they looked at it and determined it wasn't hit or damaged and that they would replace it which they did. I was going to leave the MAZDA 5 emblem off when they got done only to find out there are 2 dimples in the plastic gate that correctly line up the emblem so back on they went. Oh well.
The problem this week was my wife came home and said it was leaking oil or something. So I instantly start assumming the worst. But after following the trail of oil it ended up under the pass. side motor mount, which I found odd. I looked on here for any info on the motor mounts but couldn't find anything. So the next morning I called the local dealer and asked if the 5 had liquid filled motor mounts and it does, at least one side is as I understand it. And naturally they didn't have one in stock so they overnighted one and replaced the next day.
So for future ref. one of the motor mounts is liquid filled and they can fail and experience a little automobile diarrhea.
As another little side note my serv. advisor said mazda recently changed their policy on paying for loaner cars and it has to be at least 4 billable hours and/or some other things but I can't remember. Anyways these guys used to help me out whenever I needed it but I guess this is another result of our wonderful economy.

My rear shocks were blown after a bad winter we had earlier this year; Replaced under warranty.
Front rotors were machined becase of juttering when braking; Repaired under warranty.
One rear shock about a year ago. Recently rear spring isolator pads cause one decided to self destruct.

Dealer will be replacing the driver's door body-coloured moulding. I also plan to have them look at the vibration at cruising speed when I get it back in this week.

Looks like the alternator is bad - It was assembled exactly 4 years ago - warranty until April. Been getting a whining @ alt when idling, and starter soulds low on juice before it fires up. Thank goodness the ignition and fuel deliv. are strong.

Get this - was told that the whining is "normal" or at least common. I feel its a dismissal instead of actually investigating the prob. Anyway, the electronics test said the alt was good, batt bad. While I was there, noticed the crack in the tailgate. Add mine to the list of bad tailgates.

We had our gas cap replaced. I thought it got put in wrong as it was kinda crooked and we had to break it to take it out, but when I called the dealer to buy a new gas cap, they said it was under warranty because they've seen it happen before.

Well today mine goes back in to have the pass side slider door lock assembly replaced. It has been getting worse and finally got bad enough that they could "duplicate the problem" I have been having for weeks.
I have less than 5,000 miles warranty left so I hope the driver side slider lock doesn't fail or it does before the warranty runs out.

My Premacy here in Japan = Already solid rubber engine mounts.
I've not heard of a cars that sell for less than 50K having fluid type motor mounts, so, whoa.. learn something new because those DO get expensive, and I'd think Mazda would keep costs down and reliable, like the solid rubber ones. :)

I was shocked myself, as I was also under the impression that liquid filled mounts are more of a luxury car thing. But as is almost always the case, when something new comes out on luxury cars it eventually finds its way down the chain as it becomes cheaper to produce.
Also when I first asked the serv advisor about it he said one of the mounts was liquid filled, not both. I am sure Mazda had their reasons for only doing one but I am sure I will never know what it was.
As a side note I have been happy for the most part with my local service dept but when it comes to parts dept. not so much.
When they replaced the rear hatch they had it for 5 days and but the badges didn't come in until the next week.
When the motor mount was replaced it wasn't in stock which I can kind of understand. So I had to come back the next day.
When I took it in last week for the slider lock, they told me the bag with the part had the right number but the wrong part inside. So I now have to take it back for a 3rd time for the lock issue. First time so they can diagnose and order part because naturally they don't stock it, second time to have it replaced but they had the wrong part. So I am getting a little irritated with having to keep returning to deal with these issues.

1. Do they have a web site?
If so, ask http://www.resellerratings.com/ to add them and then post a comment,
2. Go to ... http://www.carrepairratings.com/ post a rating.
2. About the Car itself... www.carcomplaints.com
Hope that helps, a little, (wink)

My mazda5 has had too many repairs for a three year old vehicle in my opinion! The latest annoyance is the beginning of rust in my wheel wells :(
PLEASE read about my problems here, and Mazda's response.

or does not want to admit to having them!
What about this same forum?
I admit the 06 has not been the best, but nothing really warranting a lemon so far and too late! (it has taken me from point A to point B reliably). In addition, I guess we have come to the conclusion that the early 06s for many of us have been more of experimental models, yet, at least to me, there has been no other car to replace its flexibility, style and driving, still love mine (it is like marriage, LOL)
Here is a list for the 06:
Liftgate strut replaced (warranty)
Front squeaking bushings replaced (TSB, warranty)
Sliding doors locks that can freeze replaced (recall)
Exhaust replacement (recall). Really upsetting, but got a rental MPV, reset warranty for an extra 4 months and $500
New battery after 3 years (got a decent pro-rate from the dealer)
Sliding door lock actuators replaced (warranty), last week!
Loud clunk on rear driver's side shock on 80F+ temperatures (still, not able to reproduce)
Keyfob replaced after 3 years (warranty)
ECU Update (TSB)
Upside: most of this done during the scheduled maintenance...
And for the 08, just regular services so far!

Just read your blog, changsta. Had an a/c squeal too (07 GT). Dealer replaced the belt at 24000km and turned the rotors as well (N/C). Other than these fixes, no other problems.
Response from Mazda Canada to your letter was disapointing to say the least. Seems like finding a good dealer who is willing to do warranty work is the key to being a satisfied 5 owner.
BTW, your list of repairs over the 90km do not seem too excessive. However, as those km's were logged in just 3 years, it must have seemed like one problem after another.
How many of the repairs besides the brakes and the left rear shock were at your expense?

Oh Oh, and I forgot, performed the ECU update on one of the maintenance trips, did not stall in 2nd but it was a hesitant accel while cold. It's not better than the 08 but it improved after it....
Nothing else

Going in tomorrow for a warranty replacement of an intake shutter valve that has been causing the MIL (CEL) to go on intermittently for the last week or so. When they hooked up the computer, the stored code they pulled was P2006 (Variable Tumble Shutter Valve Stuck Open/Closed). According to the service advisor, this is a valve that opens and closes air flow to allow one of two intake headers to be used depending on rpm and temperature. There is a tall and short header and the computer decides which to use based on fuel efficiency and performance. I have done a search, and it seems there is a TSB on this somewhere. I have not noticed any degradation of performance, and they said the worst case would be a decrease in fuel economy. It does seem to be related to the stretch of weather in the single and minus digits in the last week or so, if I let the car warm up for a good while before driving, it doesn't seem to happen. Not too concerned, this service dept. is top notch.

My CEL came on Monday morning right after I left the house for work. It cleared after I drove ~20 miles or so. Temps have been in the low to mid 20's. It came on again today but didn't clear after 20 miles. Anyone have an idea the number of miles it takes for the code to clear?
I searched Edmunds and found a TSB on my 09 for P2004 which looks similar to P2006. After looking around the site this Valve Stuck Open/Closed seems to be a common occurrence with the 2.2L engine. I'm planning on taking it in to the dealer tomorrow.

Definitely related to cold temp, since the MIL/CEL code is for the valve that opens as a function of temperature. Went in for that repair as scheduled, but the part they were shipped was the same as the one that I had already, turns out that there is yet a *third* version, which I am supposed to be getting installed tomorrow, will report back. There was also talk of one car that they needed to replace the actual intake header on in order to resolve the problem, which the tech explained is a plastic-against-metal binding situation between the valve and the intake.
You will find that the issue goes away as soon as the car is warmed up sufficiently, and you can force the MIL/CEL to go out when it is warm by simply re-starting the car 4 more times after it has warmed up. That will clear the light, but the code stays stored.

Thanks. Please report back. My dealership told me today that it will have to code one more time before they initiate a repair. The troubling part is that they did not mention the first repair you mention. Service guy told me about replacing the intake header, etc. as the only fix. I'll let them know whatever you report back as a fix.
I will admit I am not a big fan of this dealer. My closest dealer closed last year and this one is next (distance wise). My third option is about 30-40 minutes away which makes scheduling repairs a real pain. Thanks again.

New version of valve swapped out yesterday. Service mgr. is keeping my ticket open for now until we're sure the MIL stays off, so I don't have a copy to provide part number, procedure, etc. If it doesn't code again, they will mail me the completed RO. Have driven it three times today, no MIL. But, the temps have been around 32° F., not as cold as they were when the issue first arose. Stay tuned...

Too bad about your dealer, sounds like these guys are hosers if they need the code multiple times to initiate the repair. One of the reasons I chose this dealer to buy my new 5 is that their shop is excellent. I had them do some work on another of my non-Mazda vehicles to evaluate. They were a well-known repair shop before they started selling cars, so that's a plus in my book.

Spoke too soon. MIL went on again today in 28° weather, will be bringing it in again to confirm the need for a new intake manifold. At least they have been through this drill on one other car, so they know what to do now. Will post outcome when it occurs.

2008 Mazda 5 Sport. 27000 miles.
Cylinder's head - how about that?
It started with temperature gauge going up and I headed to the dealership right away.
The first intention was to change the thermostat, but I did not want to rush them and left the car overnight.
Next morning I received a phone call that they are going to contact Mazda to get the permission to change water pump as well since there is no circulation.
Then, next day I got a phone call, that I may go to Enterprise and get the car, Mazda is going to pay for. And they will make to full circle investigation, because they got the order form Mazda to check everything. In couple of days I received a message that they checked the gasket and cylinder head and everything was fine.
However, Mazda wants to get all parts from my car and they want to change cylinder head, gasket etc., meaning they do not know exactly what was the cause.
My 5 still in the shop, (9 days already) and I hope to get some investigation result before i will get it fixed.
I will keep you all posted.

Well, I've been pretty disappointed with the realiability with our 06 Mazda5 Touring. Here is my list of issues to date:
-Replaced bad ignition coil after only 3300 miles. (warranty)
-Sliding door latch replacement. (recall)
-Engine mount replacement due to leaking fluid. (warranty)
-Noisy front suspension. Replaced bushings and lower control arms. (TSB-warranty)
-Auto trans shifter-unable to take out of park. Intermittent issue. Still have to bring to dealer.
This vehicle has 44,000 miles on it. I know this is a first year vehicle, but I expected more from Mazda.

(1) A/C belt
(2) stabilizer bar bushings, front and rear
(3) left rear shock
(4) right rear power lock actuator
(5) clutch slave cylinder
After ten years of a largely trouble free, first model year Protege - the only things ever replaced were three power lock actuators - this list really surprises me. But the really irritating thing is each of the above problems took 2 to 3 visits each to diagnose and fix. The only saving grace is that everything was fixed under warranty, but that's about to go away.
Except for the clutch - I cannot find another posting of a similar failure - I have read about all of the problems on this forum, which I am thankful for. The engine is fine, the car drives straight, and the utility remains amazing. But there is no doubt that this is by far the most unreliable car that I have ever owned. I'm convinced the car was underdeveloped when it was released.

Typical 1st year troubles. The Protege seemed to be more carryover from the 323 than this is from the Premacy. Seems they could have spent a little more time on the items that were different from the 3, like the suspension, but oh well. I feel they have addressed everything considerably better than many other automakers would, so I am fine with the work I have had done. My wife is a little urked tho. She is sick of dropping the 5 off every few months for an overnighter at the dealer, even if it is FREE, but I want EVERYTHING addressed now so it won't pop up later when the warranty expires.
Here's my probably incomplete list:
both rear door actuators, both inside locks (previous owner's kids probably were too rough, they came broken)
A/C compressor
rear bushings, tho I think they were actually OK, I just saw the TSB here
tailgate visor crack
belt whine - told it was nothing , although it appeared the same time the battery went south (on battery #3 now, mind you, in <4 yrs (wow) )
Now I am getting a bigger whine - like a bad pulley - the car goes back soon so I can get it addressed in full b4 the warranty expires in April.

On my 2007 Mazda 5 my major non warranty repairs have been:
- Sunroof glass explode unexpectedly
- Clutch exploded at 54,000 miles
- Engine failed at 62,000 miles
This doesn't include the repairs done under warranty. I've had 15+ cars and this one is by far the least reliable I've had. My Mercedes costs me less than the Mazda

Well, I have an appt today to check out the transmission. Solenoid must of totally gave out. I have to use manual override every time to take out of Park. Just yesterday, I got a CEL. Great. So that is another thing for the dealer to check out. My warranty is up in about 3 months. If this keeps up, I'm going to seriously have to think about trading it in for something else. IT was at he time I bought the car, they told me about this extended warranty, that covers almost everything and only has to pay 50$ deductible, they included this on the final price of the car it was 1563$ , expires at 75000 miles. My car actually has 45000 and reading all this stuff I think I' gonna renew this warranty after the 75000. THe name of the company is United Autocare, but they change the name to The Warranty Group.

Wow, I've put alot of miles on my 5 and had none of these issues!! I've had a few TSB's done but the dealer elected to do them all during scheduled maintenance. The first "repair" i did was at 106000, left rear shock. The 5 has so far been the MOST reliable vehicle I've had
My last car...by now I'd replaced front struts, wheel bearing, brakes, head gasket. Yep it was a Chrysler!

I'll contribute as well here.
i took her into the dealership for an oil change and tire rotation while i waited for the protege to be tinted. i also test drove a new speed3. i liked it. (black, so it hides the smile )
anyways, i get a call while im driving the speed saying there is something with the 5's transmission. so i had to cut my fun short and return to the dealership. they tell me that the transmission is leaking fluid. (forgot exactly where) luckily, it wasnt a lot, and there was still plenty of fluid left so there was no damage. i told them that i didnt see any puddles, but they said that it was all over the outside of the transmission and that it was pooling on the shielding that protects the underside of the engine.
so, now i have this crappy focus for 3 days. they said they have to take the transmission off, and reseal everything. basically it is just some bad seals from the factory. i guess they have seen a few 5's with this problem.
thank god for still being under warranty! this is the second warranty fix now in the 1.6 years. first one for for a squeaky drivers door window. they had to replace the motor on that one. luckily, mazda is giving us the rental for free as well. woot!

Just got my 5 back from the dealer. ~31k on it, so wanted to get the fixes done before 36k rolls around.
- our right rear suspension started squeaking out of the blue recently - they replaced rubber seat, but also had to mess wtih the bushings
- our gas cap got stuck randomly - replaced
- TSB fix for engine coolant water outlet gasket
- Right inner front axle shaft had oil on the outside (damaged seal?) - replaced
- lastly, our rear fan for the 2nd row seat stopped working - replaced actuator
Out of pocket cost: $0:)

It smelled like antifreeze under the hood at times. My fluid level would go down over time as well - seemed a bit faster than normal. The dealer apparently validated my concern, as they did the job. You know how finicky they can be.
My warranty will be up in a few weeks, it will be the 36th month (I'm at about 29,000 miles). No major problems, the warranty will expire unused for me.
