View Full Version : How do I remove the door panel on driver's side?

My driver's side window of a 2003 Protege 2.0 ES will not go up, but it will go down.
I bought the whole assembly and would like to replace it. I did not find a a how so I figured that many are having a problem with the window actuators and the lock assembly so this could be very helpful.
Edit
**Door panel has been removed, but how do you access the the whole assembly to replace it?**
Can anyone point out on the pics on how to remove the door panel?

After removing all these, the panel would not budge off! I even removed the door open lever/handle:

Though the panel was loose, it would not come off. I broke one the plastic tabs in the process. What is the trick to it?

Well I stand defeated today due to time and twilight. I will give it another go tomorrow.
I'll check and see if there are other bolts I missed.

Damn.
I have tried again, but no dice. This thing won't budge! The screw that hold the open lever was removed as well.
Do I have to push up from the bottom of the door to unhook it somehow? Anyone who has done this, can you point me the the tech manual or something?

After round 2 I managed to get if off.
I was missing 2 extra bolts behind the handle. The front part of the handle is removable and behind it are 2 bolts on each side.

Door panel removed:

The electrical connectors that power the windows and locks, must be disconnected and the door open lever removed.
My next question is how to get to the window assembly?
Do I remove the plastic? Does the metal portion of the door come off? It seems welded on.
Here is the broken plastic guide where the cable slides.

As you can see from the top, one piece of the plastic is farther down since it has broken off.
Here is what the new cable slide guide plastic part looks like:

How to get it on there?(help)

After 4 hrs and having breakfast, I manged to remove the window guide actuator assembly and replace it.
I had to cut off the plastic to access the mounting bolts. There are six total circled in red in the pics.
It is necessary to remove the window glass. The window must be open 1/3 of the way to access the 2 bolts and brackets that are holding it. I for got to take pics. It should slide out through the top by rotating it 90 degrees or so.
Top 2 bolts on the left.

Bottom left:

Motor mounting bolts with power supply connection in blue rectangle. The motor must be disconnected before you dismount it.

I took the speaker off to get a better look at things, but it is not necessary.

The whole assembly and motor came out through the bottom left hole. Here is the busted assembly:

The weak link in this part are the yellow plastic corners where the cable runs. They tend to break easily.
Here is the new assembly minus the motor. I had to use the old motor and place it on the new assembly.

The motor is mounted by 3 torx screws. It is a good thing I had a set from my botched GBA/Sega Saturn pad mod. They are circled in red.

I put everything back to together and installed in reverse order. I did have trouble seating the window glass back straight, but after a few tries, it went smoothly.
Definitely not a beginner's job! It took me 5 hrs to get it all done. A lot of trial and error.
Hopefully this well help others having trouble with their power windows.

thanks for the pictures and instructions. did this one this morning in just under an hour. pretty easy. hardest part is lining up the glass when mounting. first time i have worked on a window so i bet most anyone with the proper tools can do this on their own. mazda wanted 130-170 to install, and a "friend" from a dealership wanted 100 to do it.
save yourself the money and do this one yourself.
thanks again to all who contributed to this post

This thread was extremely helpful. I've never done any previous car repairs and today it only took me an hour and a half to replace the passenger side mirror (you need to take apart the whole door to get at the last screw). The pictures where really helpful. Thanks!

Yay! I'm so happy this thread exists! My top yellow piece recently broke and the bottom one came off track. Now the cables are ruined and all that. I figured out removal of the door panel on my own but didn't really know what to look for. Now I do! Thanks.

Just found this thread in time. Wife had the same problem last night so I am trying to do this now. Less the new part. Is there a way to just lock the window up for now so the car is usable and then replace the cables and such next week? If not I am guessing the car is not usable which sucks. Going to try to see what I can do now.

Well I got it done. Took about 1.5hrs to get done. Hardest part was resetting the window which in the end I decided to take out and reset. If you are doing this to that to save some time in the longrun. The part came with a new motor so everything was replaced. Just looked at old service records and my wife had this done on the driver's side by the dealer ($220) and I was able to do myself for $65. Again thanks for the write as this helped ALOT!!!

motopilot, where did you find the part for only $65? I looked for a 2001 driverside regulator and don't see any aftermarket supplier which leaves only the dealer.
That plastic top guide has failed twice on our Protege. I'm in the process of making my own. will see if it works!

Hi,
Thanks for your post with the pictures. My regulator is also broken at the plastic part. Anyways, I been looking around and couldnt find the regulator anywhere. Would you mind sharing where you got yours?
Thanks for your time,
Ven

Been a long time since I've been here! I'm glad this has helped others with such a weak link on the Protege.
To Venpro above, http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214264
is where I always get my OEM parts.
My 2000 Protege is one its' last legs, but the 2003 will supplant it.

After almost twoo weeks with little time and not being able to locate the two screws you described in your pictures I was able to get the passenger side door panel off.
Thanks for this thread.... Pictures help TREMENDOUSLY.... You guys are awesome!
