I have a 2001 Protege with cracks in belt. I replaced both a/c belt and alt belt. After replacement when I turned on the a/c it would start squeaking. I tighten the belts but it did not work. When it gets cold out it will squeak until the car warms up.(help)

Might be the clutch in the ac comprosser going out.

if you use some spray on belt dressing it helps, but only temporary...
and it's most likely not your ac compressor, i removed my ac compressor completely and the belts still squeals, so most of the squealing is most likely the alt belt...which is unfortunately the hardest one to tighten down; make sure you tighten it down enough, but not too tight.
is it squealing or squeaking?

I have the same problem i have been tightening and loosening and still no stop to the squeling.

What happens sometimes when your a/c is starting to go the compressor's pulley will lock up. This causes the belt to basically rub on the pulley causing the squealing sound. If you've been having trouble with your a/c or notice different sounds (like the engine having effort) when at idle and the a/c on, then it could be the problem. Otherwise, I have to ask (with no offense intended), are you tightening the belts correctly?

a/c has nothing to do with it, trust me, i completely removed my a/c and it still squeals.
it has everything to do with your alternator and engine load, ie: how much accessories you have on.
your alternator is running faster to keep up and supply power to what you have on, accessories wise, yes it can be your a/c, so what you have is your belt slipping on the alt pulley.
when i put my new alternator on and tightened it down to proper tension, i haven't had it squeal at all so far.
(side note: after 8-10 years, it's not a bad idea to get your alternator replaced)

^ how interesting. So was the alternator going out or do you think the pulley/bearing itself was being worn too much?

i'm quite sure, i kinda think that it was both for me.
one thing that i would not put on, is the lightweight aluminum alt pulley, it will do NOTHING except make your belt wear faster, squeal more, and the weight that you're saving is like 10's of grams...

Don't say that, I have the lightweight pulley and the engine goes so much faster! (drive)

I agree. Tighten the Alt belt.

In the Engine section under FS Mechanical.
I recommend you download it, much faster to use!
