Ok so i drive a 03 protege dx and it is boosted. the other night i was drivin home and car was runnin fine no hesitations, no jerkin or anything. i get on the hwy and the car accelrates fine when i get up to about 45-50mph and shift to 5th i noticed the car wud not accelrate and infact it was slowing down. so i down shift to 4th and still nothin and then third nothin.. so i pulled over to the side pf the road and car just dies out. the car sounds like a healthy crank but just won't fire up. i check all vac line, hoses, connectors, fuses, etc and nothin. took out the old plug and they had fuel on them. so replaced the plug and still nothin. switched the coilpacks onto my protege5 to test em and they worked fine. even tried using the pro5 coils on my boosted pro wit nothin happenin... i'm pretty puzzled. i'm sure its gotta be somethin electrical. cuz when i turn the car ingnition to on position "without crankin it over" it'll spark causing a backfire in one of the cambers. i wans say it's comin from number 3. has anyone had this problem before? anykind of suggestions on wat i shud look for or check? thanx guys

does it crank over more freely than normal? A while back I was just driving along; got to a stop light and when it was green I tried to go and nothing happend!! looked down and all my lights were on as if it had just stalled(I thought I just killed it or somthing), went to start it and it just turned over and over with nothing!? turns out My timing belt lost some teeth and snapped..... replaced the belt/belt tensioner and water pump(might as well because Im already in there and its good insurance), problem solved. Hope you get your car running soon, let us know whats up!

It cranks over just as normal as ever. it just doesn't fire up. the weird thing tho is wit just the ignition being in the on position it'll send a spark into of of the chambers causin a backfire. and this is without crankin her over. i check the belt and its good no missing teeth no cracks it looks pretty much new still. however the tension on the belt does seem a lil loose but i'm pretty sure its just the normal play

Hmmm interesting, you try tapping the cam pos. sensor while turning it over? Kinda bizzar never heard of sending spark while in the on position only..... could it be a bad ignition relay?

No haven't tried that i did take out the cam sensor and clean it tho it was pretty durty but that didn't have an affect. i'm think maybe my timing belt slipped whille i was driving. cuz it does seem pretty loose compared to my pro5. and maybe thats y it ain't firing up idk i'm tear it apart saturday and just eliminate one thing at a time.

Yeah feels like its the belt to me.... cars do wierd things when stuff is wrong lol. for sure replace the tensioner and belt while in there and maybe the water pump too for good measure. These parts are usually cheap too. good luck!!

So was checkin out the car timing and everything was good but still wasn't sparking... soo we ended up taking out my MPI piggyback just on a hunch somethin got fried... well we took it out and now the car sparks fine and wants to start however still doesn't. so when i get a chance i'ma swap the ecu from my pro5 and see if that works if not idk lol guess gonna haveta tear apart the engine

Well went ahead and swapped out ecu, sensors, coil packs' wire, sparks and still nothin. and i know all parts are workins as i put them on my protege5 to make sure.. soooo what i'm pretty much eliminated fuel and spark. so i'ma be gettin a compression tested here ina day or so and if i have decent compression thn idk wtf it cud b honestly but on the bright side i got my new turbo manifold/downpipe setup in so while she down she goona get some better parts yay!! but i'll keep u guys posted and if anyone can think pf anything else it cud b lemme know

Sorry its been awhile i been fightin the flu for a good week or two so aint got shit done lol..... anyways heres an update i got ahold of a compression tester and tested each cylinder. alll are showin 110-115psi in each chamber. keep in mind this is in a cold crank since i can't warm up the car. so the compression shud b right on the money. so wit the compression eliminated and the fuel being eliminated the only thing it cud be is the spark... and since when the MPI piggyback setup was on and didn't spark at all. then taking it off and it started to spark. but spark seems pretty weak. so any ideas what wires or fuses or what the hell u shud be lookin for?????? i pretty much eliminated everything so idk where to look... i'll be swappin out the sensors again tomorrow jista make sure but i'm pretty sure there all good.... oh and my manifold is done got it external wg ready. jist needa have internal wg flange on turbo welded shut and its good to go!!! u'll post up pics of mani prob tomorrow... again any help from anyone wud b greatly appriciated

Ok guys sorry its been awhile since i've posted but lifes been hectic... but after all the eliminating and crossing everything off the list as to what the prob wit the car... it ended up being TIMING BELT!!! the damn thing jumped 2-3 teeth n completely thru off the spark.. but finally shes back up n runnin n shes runnin great!! the new set up wit an open dump in EWG spools amazingly i have absolutely no lag whatso ever n when i hit full psi n that dump opens up the car sounds like a BEAST!! i'll post up pix of the set up on the car asap thanx for yaws input

boostedprotege

no the belt was actually pretty cherry. in my case the tensioner and idlers went bad causin slack n it to jump a few teeth.. on my protege5 i have a lil over 140k n its all original but then again its n/a been tryna talk the wifey into tradin it in for a ms6

cool...ya, i'm trying to get through the winter and i'll do the install this summer....the p5 is now my winta beta :(
by the way, love the higboost mani! i almost went with HB too!

boostedprotege
02-04-2010, 02:05 PM
yeah i know how that shit goes. winter aint to bad here but we have had our days where the snow sucked and its been rainin lol n yeah man i'm lovin the new hiboost manifold its a HUGE improvement over the MAM mani that has seen better days. that thing leaked boost everywhere and caused alot of lag. but the hiboost was well worth it all i hada do was get it bored and tapped to run the ewg.

if my p5 was going to continue to be my daily ride and get that mani and do what your doing....i've already had my MAM mani rewelded...did you have to do anything to get the turbo downpipe to fit?

boostedprotege
02-04-2010, 02:59 PM
yeah i hada flip the thermostat housing upside down and get a flex hose to make it fit. n i had my MAM mani rewelded sooo many damn times it looked like shit lol i got it jist sittin in my closet lol i think they sell a thermostat housing that goes str8 down on some site but i had asked around about flippin the stock one and everyone says it wont make a difference just haveta make sure when u put the new hose on no kinks
