It's pretty much stroked as far as it will go, our 2.0 is a stroked 1.8. People bore it .02 over sometimes when they build an engine for turbo, but if you're running a NA setup, it's really just going to be a waste of money.
These motors jsut dont make NA power, sadly. Some guys have gotten results (160-170 whp is about the highest right now IIRC) with NA builds, but they are serious builds, lotsa money. If you're looking for something fast without a turbo, buy a different car.

or piss on his ^ car and you'll gain 50whp.

Gain 50whp by going .02 over and staying na?

doesnt the japanese "mazdaspeed familia" make that from the factory? plus these engines are so simple that if you knew a good machine shop then even more power is possible. also from what it feels like from driving/owning this car it doesnt really take a whole lot of power or even mods for that matter to stay competitive with other cars...You just need to be smart about what your doing.....

the familia does produce 170hp...not whp. they have higher compression pistons, a different intake mani, different cams and the ecu is programmed differently. they also don't have the emission restraints we have in the US.
if you want to make good power, my opinion is to work on the head.

Topher is right. High comp. pistons is about all you can do in the block. chop the head down if you like, p&p, cams, cam gears, and Computer stuff. that will get you the power.
or an LS1 swap!(ugh)

It's only 10 horses clear of the regular FS-DE if you don't have a box that can rev to 7500 rpm. And without engine management or a conversion to Japanese OBDI, you don't.
With high compression pistons, cams and good engine management (which should include ignition control... lots of gains with ignition control), you should be able to get 150 whp (on a Dynojet)... but anything beyond that is blood, sweat and tears... would need a de-catted exhaust, standalone programming (for higher revs), lots of head-work, better valve-springs, better oiling, a better intake manifold, etcetera.
Which is why I'm not planning to shoot for any high naturally aspirated numbers in the near future... not until my current motor needs an overhaul and I can justify buying new internals.

I hear ya man, I was thinkin of going this route.....Go to junkyard and slowly collect good parts and then just have a machine shop dill the crank for oiling, port &polish, Balence, shotpeen,etc.... The one I talked to said they could do my whole engine for $600. I cant have a non working car though....
That's the biggie for most of us...
