View Full Version : Driving after the AP Tune

So I've seen some people mention that you should take it easy while driving for the first 50 miles or so after an AP tune, but I've also read something about disconnecting the battery.
I can't find anything in the COBB manuals about the proper driving method after flashing an AP map, can anyone give me some advice on what it is? After receiving the AP I uploaded my first map and tried some WOT 3rd gear pulls to compare to the stock map...from what I've read this is not the best thing to do and I think it may have thrown my ECU off. Now I'm looking to upload a new map and follow the proper procedure.

I don't see why it would throw off the ECU. It will take some time to learn the new maps so fuel trims and fuel ratios might be off for the first 50 miles. A few WOT pulls will actually shorten this time since the ECU will learn from this.

dude, do not go WOT. go for a cruise on the highway at 81mph(on cruise control) and watch your LTFT, wait until your LTFTs get down to atleast 1 or 0. thats the best way to get the FTs to settle. but your map will still take a few days to a week to fully settle
dont WOT until your LTFT has gotten down to 0 or 1, if your shit is lean you could risk blowing

Like every other mod give it a couple miles before going crazy with the throttle. What I do to start with I stay on low boost for some miles then start hitting higher RPMs. Then I drive it like I normally do. That means that I normally don't go WOT so I stay off of that for now. You can do 75% throttle pulls if you want but not WOT yet. I really don't know how many miles you should wait. I hear Cobb say that as soon as you flash you can drive your car like you stole it if thats how you drive. Others say 50 to 100 miles. I waited over 300 miles haha yeah it's overdo but it worked for me. What ever you feel comfortable with make sure you drive it for a couple miles to fully warm up your car before dataloggin.

when you flash the ap map onto the car it resets the ecu, same as disconnecting the battery. Its a good idea to take it easy for the first few miles, checking your afr's and fuel trims looking for anything out of wack

what AFRs and fuel trim #s should we expect?

part throttle & idle 14.7 afr if its a bit less its ok, anything higher is too lean, as you go into boost it should drop into the 11.5 region and stay there
Long term trims should be within +/-8% everywhere

Thanks for the info. I just installed my AP and am seeing a good stoich mix for idle. I see 10 or 11 in boost (got it down to 9 one time). my STFT and LTFTs are bouncing around so i'll check again later. I just wanted to make sure my numbers are safe enough to wait for the fuel trims to settle.
Thanks for the info

no problem, being a bit rich isnt bad in boost, afrs in the 12s are too lean

Cool!!!! It sounds like I am right where I want to be. I don't want to get any leaner.

Thanks for all the info. I loaded the new map last night and drove 60 miles back and forth from work while monitoring some data. LTFT stays around 6-9% while the AFR is around 14.5 (idle). Still planning on taking it easy the next couple of days while checking data. I'm running an AutoX this Sunday so I just want to make sure everything is going smooth before running the engine hard.

Give it some time and it gets better. My LTFT at idle used to be 10 now 500 miles after flash i'm seeing -7.8%.

i have to adjust my ltft's pretty bad. im seeing almost +12%. just havent had the time to get into atr and play with the maf to adjust the trims yet.

I data logged again today and it looks like my LTFTs are pretty good at idle (+2) but in boost I noticed +6 and my AFRs in boost are in the Mid 12s. I will do a MAF calibration but what do you all think otherwise?

Travis @ Cobb says low 12's AFR's are fine. I'm at 11.7 to 12.3

LTFT's should be as close to zero as possible during part throttle highway cruise.
once 1 or 0. you can go WOT
