I installed my short shifter for my MSP on Sunday, 9/13. Later that day, i started hearing small squeaks here and there, but whenever I braked and started going again, it would go away. I figured it was the heat shield on my exhaust, as I had to play with that to installed the short shifter.

Later, it got worse, To where it was squeaking a lot whenever I was driving. Even when I shifted it into neutral and let the car roll (after I had been cruising, not rolling it down a hill) it woudl still squeak. The squeaking would only stop if i pressed on the brakes, it would stop immediately. But if I let go of the breaks, the squeaking would start again.

I fiddled around with the heat shield, and can't find anything wrong with it. It's not rubbing against the exhaust, but it barely touches the shifter. Do you think it could be my breaks? I plan to go home later and check my rear breaks, but I don't have much time on my hands, no garage, so I'd like to try to pinpoint this problem to shorten my time searching for it.

Any help would help.

it's your brakes.

Check the pad retaining clips and make sure they aren't rusted and sticking.

I'd also pull the wheels and look to your brakes first.

can you replace rusted retaining clips? Would retaining clips really cause squeaking?

The "Y" clips are stainless steel, they just get dirty. I will re-confirm this tonight and update if I am incorrect.
