View Full Version : P5 Rust Poll - Production Range

Just curious if we could pin down a production range that seems more susceptible. Mine was made in late 2002 and I haven't noticed any rust (2003 yellow).
Don't forget to select a color as well as the production date.

i'd say it has a lot more to do with climate, frequency of washing, whether undercoating was used, etc.

I would think so too but there is just so much rust out there it seems like a range of production didn't get the proper metal treatment. My guess, based on my car's condition, is that the later production units won't rust as readily as the earlier units. So only one way to find out for sure (if this works).
Also is this problem only P5's or protege's in general?

p5 definitely got it worse.

its climate related, if u live in florida u prolly will never see rust on your car, if u live anywhere in the north, u prolly will...like me :(

I voted for my Protege Sedan - made in July '01. It's got the surface rust on the components under the car, and it's starting to get the rust spot in the engine bay, but other than that it's rust free. And I live in Iowa, smack dab in the middle of the rust belt.

Mines rusted to shit. I've seen a few other protege5's in town rusting in the same exact spots as mine. FML

Mine only has a little around the window in the hatch. None on the rear fenders, yet.

my MSP is all undercoated, and has only seen one winter. no visible rust.

I have a red p5 I bought it from my neighbor at 60k he bought it at 5k currently it's 70k had the car for about half a year so far, I live in New Jersey, my neighbors been here as long as me. So it's pretty much been here from 5k --> 70k miles it's seen plenty of winters, my neighbor didn't garage it (he didn't even maintenance it properly it still had the stock tires) but back to the thread, there's no visible rust on my car from what I can tell.

way off topic but why the hell would you willingly buy a car you knew wasn't properly maintained?

Ok, since you're bringing up something that's been covered many times, yes... the P5 is more susceptible to rust in the rear quarters and on the hatch near the Protege emblem than the Sedans are. As far as production range goes, I don't believe it matters as much as some may think. I've seen a 2002 rust less than an 03.5, and my 02.5 rust ALOT more than any 02 out there. Too many other factors than just production date.

^^^I agree.
I have some rust in the engine bay on the PS side (to the left of the mount) and just noticed a small bubble on the PS rear wheel well over the summer.

My 2002 has rust all over. Rear hatch at the emblems. Rear wells. inside the engine bay. At the door pillars and across the windshield because the guy before me replaced the windshield and they scraped all of the paint off under the windshield and it's now rusting like a son of a..

Looks like most people are thinking they can only select one option on the poll. Please select the date of manufacture and the color corresponding to your rust situation. With the few responses its showing a silver and red trend. Wonder if that will continue.
EDIT: damn the post right above this one is yellow, NM. Probably just a crap shoot and some are luckier than others. Either way these cars are going to be pretty rare in a few years.
Perhaps I should have added poll options for physical location.

Fix the poll. It only allows one vote right now, if you've already voted.

Can't edit the poll once its going, at least from what I can tell. Moderators may have the power.
What say you mods?

Actually I felt no need to post the production date as I believe there are too many more variables to consider which have been mentioned in other posts.

Tho it is a nice idea to see what the correlation is. Why not, it's all in good fun, right?

Damn peer pressure....production date is 10/01. lol
Also gave me an excuse to grab the 'gas log' out of the glovebox and enter another fuelly.

Production date of 8/02... My car is silver, and rust is appearing in the following places:
Top edge of roof by windshield
Bottom front corner of front DS door
Bottom center of front PS door
Rear wheel wells
Our 02 silver P5 has a production date 27-04-02 I live in Ottawa, the salt capital of the world, and our car has zero rust anywhere including the under carriage. We are the second owners and I have a suspicion this car wintered in the desert cause it is like the day it left the factory floor.

Well said, I'm just putting this out there to get some data. A lot of speculation but no real direction it seems. I have read some (if not most) of the rust related threads.
Polls are amusing anyway. Thanks for participating.

being beaten by a rusty piece of metal is what is going to give yout tetnis... for not having to worry about if your car sees excessive amounts of salt, snow, and other corrosive chemicals.

Do you mean Tetanus? J/K, I looked all over my car underneath and in the engine compartment and couldn't find any rust, however my car hasn't been outside Texas and has been garage kept since new. (redp5)

dude, I'm from the technology generation. If a computer can do it for me, why would I waste my energy doing it!? This is why I got an MIS degree!

silver with rust forming in the engine bay, rear whell well area and at the bottom of the drivers door. rust proofing has been done on a yearly basis.
