Speakers are 6.5" components in the front and 6.5" in the rear doors.
The Type-Rs will fit but be sure to check the clearance with the window. I would also NOT recommend changing out your speakers unless they are blown. Reason being, the Alpine Type-R speakers are very power hungry and will not sound good without an amp.

I had a pair of Type S components in my old protege, sounded fine

Type-S speakers are good. But I would still go with the Type-R and an amp. Much better clarity and a better cross-over.

BUMP..
Would his speaker not sound as good even if he hooked it up to an aftermarket h/u?
My right rear is blown - thinking of putting in a couple of these babies:

I ordered these a couple years back for a different car I had at the time, and have yet to use them

no tweeter, and I'll bet money they don't fit in the door. way too deep. quality looks very questionable as well.

Those speakers are actually intended for a multi-component system using crossovers and multiple drivers. You can hook them up, but due to the lack of a tweeter you will have very muddy, if any, high frequency response.
Also, Wagonbacker would be right, Lanzar aren't the highest quality products out there. Spend a bit more to get a name brand coaxial speaker and you will be much happier.
