Hi. I'm a novice backyard mechanic at best, but my brother-in-law constantly comes to me for help with his 2001 Mazda Millenia. The latest problem is that he couldn't pass the smog test because:

"Geoff, do you know how to adjust the ignition timing spec? That caused me to fail my test today."

Is there a "back yard" procedure I can use to help him out? Is it just a timing adjustment? Hopefully, I'll know a little more when he comes up later on tonight.

Thanks

first off man is this a 2.5 or a 2.3? cause if it is a 2.5 you have to move the disty with the car in diagnosisi mode with a timing light and the car running. its a very simple procedure.

Mark sure you jump the ten and the ground pin in the diagnostic connector before you change the timing on the 2.5 model.

The 2.3 has a cam position sensor as well on the front of the motor on the front cylinder head. I do not believe it is adjustable though.
