Thank you Vegas for the nice writeup...
http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94788
Weeeeell, mine didn't go as smoothly. Now I'm clearly no mechanic, but Vegas says 30 minutes tops, so this should be OK. here goes...
9:30am, go to autozone for some Brakeclean carbon cleaner.
9:45 pop the hood and get down to work. Removed the upper intercooler pipe, plastic vavle cover deal, and remove the sensor for the EGR.
10:00 realize that i need to remove more intercooler pieces.
10:30 realize that I've just removed the bottom two bolts to the throttlebody, not the EGR bolts.
10:40 replace said throttlebody bolts.
10:41 notice where the EGR valve bolts actually are
12:30 tired of *&^ing with the EGR bolts, find out mazda247 is not working, search other internet resources, get pissed off, I WALK to the hardware store to buy another wrench.
2:30 having unscrewed ONE EGR bolt, realizing that even though it is unscrewed it won't come out because it hits another part of the engine, and having @#%$%ed with the other EGR bolt for well over an hour only to not get a good enough angle to move it at all, realize I'm hopeless and this is never going to happen, get PISSED, give up.
3:00 replace all engine pieces, take car for test drive, FREEK out because it idles at 3000rpms, feel relieved that it only does that for a moment and then behaves normally (normally in that it low idles STILL of course).
3:15 want to kick Vegas in the vagina, realize maybe it is I who has vagina, thinks to self, "I have stopwatch and $50 says you can't do the whole deed in 30 minutes."
3:25 start venting on mazdas247, feel better now.

and now you see why it's retarded to clean this shit than to just replace it with the BETTAR canadian one and NOT EVER touch it again?
cleaning it = gambling... you just don't know how well you've done it and when it'll fail again
and carbon build up is NOT the *only* reason why it fails
cleaning it is a big waste of time considering how much shit you have to remove on an MSP to get to it... then having to cut your hands up trying to get the bolts out with a stock rear motor mount under it!
I damn near fell off my chair when some dude suggested to someone who was hundreds of miles away from home with NO tools to just clean his EGR valve at the parts store's parking lot.... yeah it's "easy"... maybe on your fucking P5!

Believe me.. it takes a lot longer than 30 min.

Actually I've cleaned mine several times and can do it in under 30 min. Not including the cleaning part itself. The first time was a half ass job the last time I spent and hour scrubbing the inside. I'm thinking the CAN one is my next step and I guess O'Reily's can order it for just ten bucks more then the stocker!!
I'm just concerned with having to tap into (I think) coolant lines.

i could do it in 30 mins easy....mine wasn't hard at all
TheMAN
09-04-2009, 05:19 PM
its only "easy" when you have an aftermarket rear motor mount, and some sort of FMIC setup where the pipe runs differently
I literally replaced one on an MSP in 20 mins because the cold pipe ran flat along the top of the engine bay instead of up along the tranny like most of them are... all I did was take the battery and battery tray off!
there's no reason to stick to the piece of shit original EGR valve if you live way up in the north where its colder than hell... all a big waste of time to fuck with cleaning it up when you already got rusty bolts on the car

The first time I cleaned mine, it was a PITA!!! But after that, I can have it out and back in, in about 20 minutes(not the actual cleaning, just disassemble/reassemble).

I stand by what I say. I got $50 bucks and a stopwatch. 30 minutes, I have serious doubts. That SUUUCKED.

like I said before
impossible to do in 30 mins with a stock motor mount
possible with AWR, etc
I have a better idea.... take a road trip to winnepeg or thunderbay and pay a canadian dealer to install the much better redesigned canadian EGR valve for you

I have stock ic piping and can get mine done in 30 min also. The first time might be a bitch, but I guarantee the next time you try it, it'll take close to 30 min since you'll know what you are doing this time. Btw, my idle actually improved quite a bit after cleaning mine, so imo its not a complete waste of time. But that's just me....

once it fucks up on you again, you'll see it's a waste of time because you'll have to dick with it again
whereas if you just replaced it outright with the improved new parts, you won't have to mess with it again
I like my car to be reliable and I don't want to touch my car every weekend, thank you... I like to be modding my car and NOT fixing it
you were able to do yours in 30 mins because you have a medieval motor mount... like I said a million fucking times already, if you got a stock mount, 30 mins is IMPOSSIBLE

Is there a reason why you get so amped up over something so simple? Maybe I don't get around the forum enough, but for some reason, every thread I notice you post on, you have an attitude about something. Stock or aftermarket motor mount aside, the job isn't that hard to do once you figure out what you are doing. And maybe its just me, but I like to touch my car....makes me feel good. Haha

He's just like that.. he's the pissed-off version of Forcefed. I say that because Forcefed always knows what he's talking about, but then TheMAN adds in some occasionally unnecessary attitude. I've learned you just have to brush it off and learn the personalities on here and not get offended easily. I'm sure you're not the only one that's noticed that though, but it's a sacrifice you gotta make because 99% of the time both of them know what they're talking about in regards to these cars, it's worth knowing the right answers and putting up with a little attitude to get them. ;)

Oh, I have absolutely no problem with attitude. Just don't like being called out (I'm the guy that told the kid he could solve his problem at autozone if the EGR was the problem) as if I'm an idiot. Like you said though, I still have to learn the personalities on here. I don't actually get on very often.

I'm throwing in my 2 cents. I have never cleaned my EGR or thought about doing it. And yes my car idles smoothly at 700 rpms with no occasional dips. Never has. I like to think that my frequent Seafoam treatments are the reason why. So screw cleaning the EGR or replacing it with a canadian version.

I've removed my EGR valve twice for preventative cleaning... never really had much of a problem either time. Took well over 30 minutes round trip, but didn't make me rage either.
You're welcome to bring the MSP by my place one of these days and we can get that bitch done. Still on the hunt for a job, so I've got nothing but free time. lol

could be, but running good gas also helps
our cars (P5s, etc, not just MSPs) like to run premium gas for some reason and running regular just seems to carbon them up good!
but if it does fuck up, the canadian EGR is the only way to go... fix it and forget it!

I'm not doubting that the Canadian EGR is the way to go if you have the idle issue and nothing else has worked. I should have worded my first post better.
What's the cost on that one?

I'll definitely take you up on that offer! I'm still job hunting myself, so I'm working third shift still. I'll give you a call tomorrow.

If you go to your Local O'Reilly's/Murray's they have a program within there computer that allows them to special order from any of there vendors and order from any of there stores. They have O'Reilly's in Canada and he showed me how he can order it. The guy has a very Modded Talon and he's been trying to hang out with our local club MazdaTeam. They have all kinda a cool ways of getting parts they they don't out right tell you!!!
I was happy to hear that info cause my Project car is a Suzuki samurai, and I was hoping to import a long wheel base one. He actually showed me that he could order me up the LWB frame and body!!

question about this.... I have the 1.6 2000.5 protege and I can't for the life of me get the bolts off was thinking of taking it to the stealership and getting them to do it, but I noticed The Man says the canadian one is better... is this a later model than the one that is currently on my car? I am just experiencing slight power loss and with my mods I figured it would be quicker not slower than when I got it :( also noticing a funny idle... like 800 then 500 then 800...... ect and when I come to a stop it drops down to almost 200rpm which is kinda sketchy
