View Full Version : Engine? Turbo?

I just recently had the turbo rebuilt. Put the turbo, mani, radiator, intercooler, etc. all back together. Oil changed and coolant flushed. Ran the car for about 2.5-3 hours. Smoke seemed to be clearing. Looked for any leaks or potential leaks, found nothing.


Took a dealer plate home and took the car for a spin last night. Still having a lot of smoke. Looks like there is an oil leak somewhere, but can't seem to figure it out. The top intercooler pipe seems like there is still oil biulding up.

I'm having a diagnostic meltdown.

Any ideas?

Where is the smoke coming from, engine bay or exhaust. How long did you drive the car?

Exhaust. Due to the extreme amount of smoke produced, I could only go about a 1/4 mile down the road and back. Thought someone would have called the cops, thats how bad the smoke was.

Oil level is fine, but there was some fresh oil around the top intercooler pipe next to the line that runs to the valve. There is vaccum there and the valve is operational.

recheck the return line and see if it's kinked. I did that, even had to take the turbo out and send it to get repaired. He inspected it and laughed at me. Said put it back and be cautios of how the return line sits when I install it. Never had an issue again.

You have a picture of how your return line is now so I can compare?

If it doesn't end up being an oil line then go ahead and replace your pcv valve. My buddy rebuilt his whole engine cause it was smoking so bad and he still had smoke, come to find out the pcv valve had failed and was causing all the smoke. Hey and even if it isn't the pcv you only spent about 5 bucks.

I know the smoke he is talking about, it's SMOKING! I had that for a day, I expected it to go away from the new turbo but it just got worse.

How did you end up overcoming it? I've checked the line, seems fine, and the pcv valve seems to be operational.

I can't believe none of you who's been with turbo cars for a long time didn't even think about OLD oil in the intercooler!

Your right. The first time I blew a Turbo seal I had to flush out the damn intercooler with degreaser. It was full of oil. I even had fuckin oil in the throttle body!

There is no real evidence of old oil. The oil looks and smells fresh. From right after the oil change.

I did clean out the intercooler, but you're right, there may be more in it than what I already got. You have some better cleaning suggestions?

Like mentioned earlier, if the Crankcase Ventilation system has any blockages you will get pressure up the oil drain line to the turbo causing another seal to give out. Did you make any changes to the PCV system? Krank valves etc...? I would start by not driving it and inspecting the damage. Did the Rebuild shop give you a warranty? It could also be an assembly error witch I doubt or Blow-By. I would also check your spark plugs to make sure you don't have bad exhaust valve seals as well and it could be as simple as oil build up in th catalytic converter and exhaust pipe that is still burning off from when you first blew the turbo seal.
