CF hood, prep work?

I was looking at the oem CF hood from Fiber images. Does this have to be clear coated when i recieve it? also what is the benifit of going to carbon kevlar?

It should already have a clear coat on it. The benefit would be that it's lighter than the stock hood.

it would help even out the wight distribution from going from 50 pound hood to a 15 pound hood!

well the stock hood has been measured to be 72lbs. (with the ducting) So a 2lb hood is sweet!! haha, the fiber images i think is said to be 23lbs with ducting.

lol. i wont have ducting in a week...so id lose 50 or so lbs. 70 was a stretch...but exhaggeration is the key to peddling a product. duh.

dunno, i'm sure it'd be pretty close to the same difference as the hood. if i'd have to guess, i'd think it'd be pretty close to 75-100lbs weight savings between the two.

Probably some miss reading but the stock hood only weighs in at 39lbs with ducting and the CF is 18-20lbs with ducting.

i call for reweight. that damn hood is HEEEAVY! even with the pivot point it feels like you have a bag on concrete attached to it.

70lbs weight savings. that is all. lol.

Yeah the hood is not 70 pounds. I would be pretty damn hard to lift up at all if it were. I don't think the hood prop could hold 70+ pounds.

Just my $0.02, hoods are an important part of the crash crumple zone. Replacing the metal one with CF could turn the hood into a projectile when it shatters or at the very least, reduce the frontal impact energy absorbed by the car. Not worth the 20 ish pounds if you ask me.

where's the projectile going to go, through the windshield that is layered so that it doesn't shatter into a million pieces and go everywhere?

and there's plenty of more important crumple zone stuff in the frame

what if u rear end a truck and dont hit the frame? or it comes in you lane and hits you head on!the frame will take come of it but most will be sheet metal. the folding of the hood absorbs the energy from the hit. the carbon will probley just break and put for the force into the passenger compartment of the car and hurt the occupants. just a body mans point of veiw

depending on the truck if it's a semi they have the low bars that prevent vehicles from going under the trailer at all. if it was a regular pickup regardless of the hood if you're going fast it will probably end up on top of you, too slow and maybe just dents and scratches. but the hood type wouldn't matter

the frame takes most of it, and is designed to do so. the frame protects the rigid cabin by both absorbing impact and slowing momentum of the object impacting

CF will not only break it would splinter, but all im saying is where are the splinters going to go? through all that other metal and the safety glass windshield?

im just saying what percentage of impact does the hood really take in a frontal collision? i just don't think it's that much

of course no 2 accidents are ever the same so to argue about "what if" factors would be pretty dumb
