My son's 1999 Protege 1.8L auto has a strange issue. When decelerating - taking foot off of the accelerator, the car sometimes will hesitate..hard to describe maybe not a hesitation but certainly not smooth. Anyone every experience this? I am thinking that maybe the MAF is going bad but no CEL.
Thanks

i'd check the throttle linkage, it's probably sticking.

Sticking linkage, or possibly a TPS or MAF.
Would be one that you would have to check with a current data feed off the OBD-2

i would think that this would depend on how fast you take you foot off of the pedal and at what speed you're going at too...
the faster you take your foot off, and also the slower you're going, the more likely you're going to have some hesitation; mostly from the drastic rapid change...
make sure you're smooth with the car, if you are or rather, your son; if so, the throttle cable or the MAF seems like the most likely problem.

maybe clogged fuel injectors
is the AC always on?
Check and clan the IC Valve...
