I have a 96 Protege LX. The passenger side electric fan for the radiator won't turn on.

Any experts out there have troubleshooting hints? Is there a temperature sensor that triggers it and where is it located? Is it the relay? How do I bypass and test the fan motor?

Thanks!

Bypass and test by shorting the fan to the battery. just make a direct connection with some lampshade cord or even a jumper cable. if the fan runs, then the fan is probably ok.

Thanks. I tried and fan still does not turn on. I took the metal cover off the motor (3 nuts) and it appears there is a sensor of some kind near the wiring connector. Does anyone know if this A/C fan has a thermal switch to come on at a certain temperature???

It's my understanding (at least on 3rd gen proteges) that the pass side fan is tied to the AC only, and will only come on when the AC compressor is on and the the heat exchanger reaches a certain temp.

Have you tried letting the car idle with the AC on?

That understanding is correct. make sure to check with A/C on.

I have a similar problem. My 97 Protege LX has been overheating for a long time now. At first the problem seemed to be leaks in the radiator and water pump, so now those are new, but it still overheats in stop and go traffic. I took it to the shop, and they told me the main fan wasn't working (they plugged it straight to the battery to go past relays, and nothing). However, they claim the passenger side fan is the main fan, and the driver's side fan is the Aux. fan. They say the Aux. fan is kicking in when the car heats up, and the main fan just isn't going. Does this sound right? I'm not entirely convinced this is right. Is buying a motor for the passenger side going to help if it turns out it's just the aux. fan? Keep in mind I never run the A/C, but blast the heater when my car heats up.
