View Full Version : Sounds like a bearing???

Here recently I have been hearing this odd noise. It's not really a whistling noise air related. It seems more like a bearing noise and very high pitched. It seems to happen when I am accelerating. Seems to be on the driver side but not 100% sure b/c I do not usually have anyone with me. The last time I had my buddy Sean22306 with me and we both seemed to think it was coming from driver side but had no idea what it could be. I've only noticed it when I'm in fifth and at a steady pace, if I give it gas or let off it seems to stop but if I get back up to that RPM (seems to happen around 2500-3k; not sure and I will analyze better on my next drive).

Like I said though: High pitched bearing noise possibly on driver side.

I tried to do some searches and read some thought it was bearing in turbo, some thought it was axle, someone said differential....looking for opinions.

Yeah, I have the same noise.. even after getting my trans rebuilt though.

Well, I guess that can possibly scratch transmission noise. lol.

Turbo bearing going bad??? I'm still doing a search on bearing/highpitched/etc noise

What about the transmission mount? I've read that it can make a noise like that too.. I don't think it's the turbo. It will stop depending on if you take your foot off the gas or if you push the clutch in.. I still think it's something with the transmission/clutch.

Transmission Mount? I just installed some AWR Side Mounts.

Is there any way I can troubleshoot trans for noise?

Throw-out Bearing? I'm not exactly sure how I can diagnose problem coming from transmission

The solid motor mounts are transfering noise through your car and its the differential, mines been doing it for 2 years now most likely the bearings on the diff are going bad mine makes that noise in every gear 4th and 5th are the loudest you can hear it outside the car my friends have heard it when I pass them sounds like its got a dogbox transmission lol.

I've been looking at clutch kits and differentials online today b/c i had thought it was differential. Actually bc i was looking at doing an engine rebuild, but I may just do the transmission first.

How can I be for sure that it is the differential? I'd hate to replace it and it still be there.

Like MSP4G63 said, solid motor mounts transmit noise from the transmission into the chassis/frame and amplify the sound. I had never heard a bit of gear whine until I installed a solid rear mount, and now it's pretty noticable, rpm/load defendant. In fact, re-reading your original description of when it happens, it sounds very similar to the gear whine I hear.

My money would be on nothing actually being wrong, you are just now hearing noises that were always there and are normal--especially since you said you just installed solid side motor mounts. Same as installing an intake will bring on a whole host of noises you don't hear with a stock airbox--the root cause of the noise was always there, you just couldn't hear it.

Here is a video of my sound (at idle..)..

Ouch!!! that doesn't sound good could be many things you have to take the tranny off and see if its the throwout bearing, flywheel bolts could be coming loose, pressure plate coming loose off the flywheel or it could be inside the transmission itself.

Yeah, it does sound more toward where the flywheel/clutch is too.

I hope it is more towards the mounts. Everything seems to be running the same.

I know my high-pitched noise started after I installed 90 dur AWR mounts. It sounds like a high-pitched saw.

I have the same noise. I think its the clutch as well. The noise starts around 2-3.5k..

I had the same problem. My intake was leaking.

I had the same problem...Ended up changing out the transmission under warranty...

It ended up being the bearing where the axle goes in. The raceway chipped and the bearing ended up shearing apart.

Sounds like the throw-out bearing to me. I remember my old Protege had a similar noise at idle. Just try replacing the clutch and see if that fixes it. My bet is that it will...

I think you can check if its the throw-out bearing by pressing the clutch pedal down. If the noise goes away, then it is most likely not your throw-out bearing. This is just what I heard...Not 100% positive.

its the main bearings in the crank shaft....i spun a bearing and that was the same noise that was happening....and its when u have a steady speed....and when u accelerate or lead off u cant hear it right???same thing that was happening....didnt care about it and 5 months later i spun a bearing....
