alright so i changed my oil today. i used valvoline synthetic. i started up the car and let it run for a while. i came back and it was making a really slow weird noise, and there was smoke coming from the engine bay and out the exhaust. the exhaust was also gurgling. i have no idea whats wrong. i used 10w-30 but i accedently used a quart of 20w-50 in the mix. im not sure if that would cause my car to shit out on me.

help, thanks

P.S. i put in 3.5 quarts, it started smoking, so i figured i put in too much. i checked the dipstick and it was a little bit over full. so i drained out some oil, started the car up again, and it started smoking again after about 5 minutes. i checked the dip stick and it shows that the oil is 3/4 full.

isnt too much oil bad? Owners Manual call 3.7 with filter change. I use 10w 30

drain it and fill it all with 10-30 ASAP!!. since you mixed in a different weight its gonna layer and not mix.

Not that it will matter, but specs call for 5-30, and if its to clean up / flush the system, the 5 weight might help.

i typically use the 5w30. i would just do the flush and change. let it drain pretty good. not sure on the filter but it probably would be fine and you wouldnt need a new one. but do it quick

the problem is that you mixed weights

its all full synthetic. just when i picked up the oil at the store today, some retard put a 20w-50 in the 10w-30 section, so yeah i didnt look at the label untill after i poured it in. but seriouslt i dont think that the different oil weights would make it burn like that

For the cost of 4 qts of oil I'd still change it out.

I use Mobil1 Full Synth 10W 30 I believe. It's hard to remember. I probably don't NEED full synth but I figure what the hell, I love this car.

I took my car into the Mazda dealer for a routine oil change. As I was driving down the road afterwards, I noticed the accelerator was not very responsive and then notice plumes of smoke in my rear view mirror. (drive2) I very, very, slowly drove back to the service center still with smoke billowing out and they took it round the back to fix it. Their explanation was that they had overfilled it with oil (so much for going to the Mazda dealer)(unamused), and that it would not have caused any damage to the engine. I'm concerned about damage though - seals, etc.

I realize this is the msp section, but I was interested to see the replies that mention if the oil weight is mixed this might also cause smoking. My Mazda is supposed to have 5W-20. Would mixed weight oils have the same effect as overfilling the oil and cause similar kinds of engine damage?
