I was at a local car dealer this weekend and saw a MSP (might have been a MP3) behind a gate in their "holding area". I asked if it was a recent trade and any idea if when the car would go sale or it was headed for auction. To my dismay they told he it was Cash for Clunker trade and they destroy the engines so the cars can't be re-sold!!! I damn near passed out on the spot. I had no idea that's what they do the the Clunkers.

My BS meter just exploded.

#1-The MSP doesn't qualify for the program. It gets WAY to good of MPG.

#2-The trade in MAX is $4500. You could sell an MSP for that pretty easily on your own. (it is possible that some moron would accept 4500 for his MSP, but then again, refer to #1)

#3-the salesman is an idiot and doesn't know what he's talking about (likely true)

MSP rated at 23 mpg, you need the rating of 18 mpg of LESS. MSP does not qualify.

I certainly hopes it's BS or the salesperson was mistaken. Poor MSP. :(

Was it damaged / totaled / had a blown engine that it would have qualified for the Cash for Clunkers program?

There is a Ford- Cosworth with the bigh wing over here had the same thing done. They could have easily sold it for what they got on a rebate. I think the whole porgram is BS to begin with and secondly I think one should be able to make an offer on the car and buy it back off the government. Win win situation. Car marker sells car and government makes more money. Instead we pay for other people's cars and good cars get wasted. Sorry about the rant.
I don't like to talk about the government it's a lose lose situation :)

i agree the whole program is a stupid idea. it makes people who can't afford to buy a new car, think that they can...and in the meantime good cars are being destroyed (however i'm told the junkyards can part them out) as well as the used car market is losing its merchandise.

I drove back over there today. It was a black P5 afterall. I didn't stop to ask again but it's still parked in the back lot with some older cars.

Drove pour something into the engine and run it thru, then they have 90 days to part it out before its crushed.

You could always buy the parts off it. Talk to them, sure they'll do it. It's sodium silicate. If you're not familiar with it, it basically hardens like glass when it's exposed to air. If it breaks though, it will cut you. I know, first hand.

A P5 qualified for Cash for Clunkers??? Not possible. 22mpg city/28mpg highway = 24mpg average (EPA calculation). Seems like the dealer might be somehow trying to rip off the government.

I'm sure in a couple of months you will be able to buy all these repoed cars because people could not afford them in the first place. But hay it was on sale!
