Problem when hitting the gas

Whenever i hit the gas on my 01 protege it usually takes a few seconds to get up and go..i'll hit the gas and it doesn't go for a few seconds and then it takes off fast cuz of how far i pushed it in..why is it doing that and how can i fix it? thanks

Have any engine fault codes? Eng fail light?

Lean mixtures usually cause a hesitation and rich mixtures cause a bogging condition.
