hello everyone, its been a very long time since i have posted, luckily i haven't had any problems with my speed protege ever since the dreaded LSD failure, however just recently i had a horrible experience on my way back from the beach, while in traffic the car decides to overheat on me in 95 degree heat, no big deal right? i've got the car loaded down at full capacity as well (mistake? i think so) so im just thinking the car has overworked itself, not to mention i have a smaller radiator than the OEM radiator (bought the car used, came with a miata radiator retro-fitted to make way for the hi-boost intercooler piping) i shut the car down for the time being, and when the car was on i had to blast the heat to keep the temp. down, i finally got to an oasis (aka autozone) and bought some 50/50 mix, let the speed cool down and filled the radiator (which was pretty much full), got back to my friends house, with no problems, drove it that night with no problems,(the one time i decide not to bring my tools!) however the very next day after about 45 min. of highway driving, the car overheats again!! i go through the motions, crank up the heat and take it easy, btw there is absolutely no shoulder to pull off onto, so i get off at the closest exit and park in front of a local grocer, i then open the hood and take off the oil cap to allow optimum cooling (with the heat still blasting) i then smoke a pack of cigarettes and decide what to do......fast forward one day...finally back home and i change the water pump, thermostat, timing belt, and both belts, before i do that however i take a quick spin (0-100mph at WOT)does not overheat until im heading back home, and it slowly overheats.... theres my story and here are the things to keep in mind:

before changing the w/p and therm. i noticed that at idle the car would not overheat, rad. fan comes on, and it did take a while for the car to reach running temp, (10 min or so.) (i know it doesnt make sense it originally overheated while in traffic)

there is a slight murky tint to the coolant, looks like rust and scale buildup, but does have the rainbow tint when light hits it (synthetic oil maybe?)

no smoke of any kind came from the exhaust (hopefully im lucky and didnt warp either the block or head....or for that matter both)

there is a possibility that the bearings inside of the turbo have gone bad, i notice a nice shearing sound when i blip the throttle after initial crank of the car, but i also do have a hairline crack on the exhaust manifold.(exhaust leak)
the turbo is quite grimy, could it be a possibility that oil is mixing with the coolant via the water jacket, causing the oil to mix into the cooling system?

the car cranks strong and idles like a watch!

i inspected around the block and saw no leaks, squeaky cleen.

have flushed coolant system, and changed w/p and therm. all belts as well (timing included)

i have equipped a wideband A/F meter, boost gauge, and tuned split second AFC , wideband reads normal, as does boost gauge. and im running around 7.5 to 8psi.

everytime the car overheated, the weather was a cool 95+

all precautions were taken as best as i could in the situation i was in to not damage the car more

i did have the car towed home, so no further damage was done!

thats really all the info i have, however i probably have left something out, i tried to be as thorough as i could, (sorry for the long post)

i will tremendously appreciate any help in advance! ive been working on cars as a hobby for quite a while,(building a 240sx drift car from the ground up now) so i do know quite a bit about how things work under the hood, but im stumped!

this forum has also saved me quite a bit of time and money so i would like to give back the best i can, if anyone needs any help i will try my best to answer any questions i can (name a problem with the msp and ive probably dealt with it already!), i also have an alldatadiy account (expires 7-2010) so if anyone needs anything or acces to an alldata account on the msp's email me at wolfy06@gmail.com

once again thanks in advance!

btw if anyone is in the north carolina area and drifts, we are getting a purpose built drift track at the metrolina expo in charlotte, NC. the coordinators for all this have a website www.streetwisedrift.com

i must say im lucky im right in between a drift course and VIR!

Sounds like you've done pretty much everything already. So the murky looking coolant.....is that only before the flush? Or is it still murky afterwards? If its still murky afterwards, then maybe a few more flushes are needed to get all that gunk out?? I have to do the same thing to mine. That rainbow tint would worry me though....that really sounds like oil getting into the coolant.

wait.... so your still overheating?.. it that the problem?

That's what it sounds like....

thanks for the quick responses! well it still seems to still be overheating after i installed the new parts and did a coolant flush, (sorry, knew i forgot something), i haven't driven it long enough to see if im getting any oil into the cooling system yet. when i get a chance i will go ahead and give it another flush and check the coolant, i know normal conventional oil gives the coolant an almost milky substance, but im not sure how synthetic reacts to coolant (i guess it just gives it that murky rainbow tint). im really starting to think the turbo bearing has gone south causing oil to enter the cooling jacket, this seem to make more sense than a warped block/head or head gasket, because there is no trace of smoke from the exhaust and there is not enough oil in the coolant to warrant that of a head gasket failure. if its the turbo than that would account for the nice metal on metal shearing sound i hear before the turbo bearing becomes fully lubricated, i should have monday free to drive it, check the coolant and do another flush so i will keep things updated... however on a lighter note, i get to clear my mind and go to a drift comp.,(pray i dont hit a wall) registration starts at 8, and im too amped to go to sleep! thats why im replying at 3 im the morning, lol

once again thanks in advance for any advice!

does ur turbo have oil residue build up around it? cuz my turbo makes that same wierd noise i say check your turbo forsure how often do you change your oil?

it sure does! as far as oil changes...its completely unnecessary but i change my oil every 2,000 to 3,000 miles using 5w30 royal purple and a fresh filter every time, and ever since the differential breaking on me the car is rarely given a harsh drive. its taken up into the upper rpm range occasionally to blow some carbon buildup out of the exhaust

Definitely sounds like the turbo is headed south.
Wow, royal purple every 2-3k miles?! That quite a lot of money. I never noticed a difference with that stuff, so I stopped using it. Not worth the money imo. But at least you know its unneccessary....and knowing is half the battle. Haha.
