Okay, so I am getting the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD for my 2008 Mazda 3...
I have the standard 4 speaker system so no bose. Will I be able to retain the
LCD panel above the radio? If so, how? I know it is run by a separate harness than the factory radio.

As I understand it, the LCD panel's functionality is built into the factory head unit. So if you remove the head unit, you lose the LCD's functionality. Unless the head unit you buy specifically has those functions built in, like some of the custom, but off-brand units from China.

Pioneer should at least have an adapter available to let you retain your steering wheel controls, though. But that's usually a separate purchase from the head unit itself, as an accessory.

You will lose the LCD display. No extra harness, it's part of the stock radio.

You only lose the left hand side of the display. The temperature display is not built into the radio, so you will retain that.
