99 protege shifting problem

okay i have a 99 protege, it's an automatic 1.6, and it seems like its a little late shifting into gears, is this a common problem? what sensor would this be?

okay, the o/d light is flashing at me, is there any way to get this transmission error code w/o bringing it to a mechanic to read it? what sensors could it be? speed sensor?
