k&n air filter- any problems and how do you like it?

I'm planning on getting a K&N drop in air filter (not the intake system) now that my break in period is done (finally) so I was wondering if there have been any problems when you install the K&N filter. Problems such as electrical/computer issues such as the computer thinks your air filter is out of whack or just ANYTHING!

any feedback would be great!

Are you talking about the ridiculously overpriced Typhoon intake system, or just a K&N Drop-in filter? Can't say much about the Typhoon system's performance, but I have never heard of a K&N drop-in causing an issue in any vehicle.

i have a K&N drop-in (if that's what you mean cuz you're missing some product description) and it works just fine. i like using the drop-ins because they basically cost less over X amount of time.

not sure how much the stock paper filter costs, but i think the manual says to change every like 15k or something. if i were to guess i'd say the paper filter costs like $20 each, my K&N cost me $60 (on sale). so it would basically pay for itself after like 45,000 miles, i don't even think i have to clean it till 50k

oh and i get like 5 more cfm out of the K&N

You won't notice much extra power out of it, I am using one right now. Maybe like 2 HP and LBS TQ... if that. I've read lots of tests and the oiled cotton filter lets in a lot more airborne trash into your motor. The factory paper filters are just incredible at stopping lots of small particles, and the practical driving difference you can sense from any other drop in filter isn't really that beneficial.

I think I'll just switch back to the paper filters unless I decide to go CAI where real gains are felt!

I got my K&N used for 25$ and have a cleaning/oiling kit.. not much to lose there.

.I thought the same thing but I have switched back and forth from airbox to intake and there are ways to work with the K&N drop in.(inout)

Had the K&N drop-in for over a year - no problems whatsoever. Also very little performance difference. SRI w/dryflow FTW.

i've looked at a few of the 'tests', and frankly, i'm not buying it... air filter tests are always kinda sketchy.....

i've used k&ns for years, a company i worked for sold them (i wasn't in sales, but i used them for years before i worked there), ..... never did i see one coming back for coming apart, messing up an O2 sensor, or really anything. the dust thing i don't understand, either, as every car i've ever had one on, you take the filter out to oil it and the intake area looks like brand new. not oily or anything... dry. clean.

i have felt hp gains with a k&n drop in on a few vehicles, but not really the MS3... i am getting a bit better mileage, but that could be anything, really. this car breathes so well anyway.

i bet the SRI kit for this thing would really wake it up...

I will never believe anyone that says the minute particles that get past either a paper or oiled filter will have any affect on the performance of my car. Unless it's a continuous flow of water vapor through the filter, anything small enough to get through is going to be incinerated.

P.S. My K&N drop is fine also. :) I like it because it's easy and maintainable rather than replaceable.

I've used K&N in the past without problem.

The only issue that I have heard of is that people improperly re-oil after cleaning the filter and then have problems with their MAF. It takes a limited amount of oil to reload the filter do not get carried away.

I'm running the Mazdaspeed CAI myself.

that's part of the stuff that ends up gunking up the oil and combustion chambers, they don't all just disappear when ignition happens

+1 on K&N being maintainable rather than replaceable. that's why i got one. that is until this damn mazdaspeed cai comes back out
