I just took off the stock airbox and slapped on a cone filter to the MAF, my buddy says its not smart cuz the MAF reading will be all outta whack so its just gunna dump fuel like a mad man on crack. What do you guys think?

Umm.. well, I think that's how a SRI intake works unless you relocate the MAF.. I had rigged up the same thing with my car and it ran fine that way.

I did just that for a brief time while I was modifying my intake... worked just fine. My current intake setup has the filter stuck directly on the MAFS, and no problems. Maybe not ideal... but I haven't noticed any issues.
As to whether you're going to see gains vs using the stock airbox... I'm gonna go ahead and say no.

What about the gas dump; did you notice anything about that?

Nope. Technically, it's not much different than stock, except instead of the airbox, there's a filter. The MAF is still attached directly to the source of the air.. if that makes sense.

Nope. What your friend was probably referring to is that generally MAF sensors like to have a nice fully-developed airflow across them so that the reading is accurate and consistent. Usually that means a bit of straight pipe directly upstream. However, if you actually look inside the airbox, the MAFS housing is basically just sticking into a big open box. So sticking a filter directly on the end is actually not much different than the condition it's seeing with the stock airbox. In addition, the MAFS housing has an air straightener built in to help create a more uniform flow through the housing.
If a MAF sensor doesn't see a fairly uniform and consistent airflow across the rpm and engine load range, it has trouble accurately reporting how much air is being drawn into the engine, which could cause an excessive rich (or lean) condition as your friend was saying. Luckily for us, that doesn't seem to be the case.
