your engine is fine. rev limit saved you. just dont do it too much.

Rev limiters don't work for downshifts. They only work when the engine is trying to turn the wheels, not the other way around. If the clutch is engaged into third gear when the car is moving at 90mph, guess how fast your engine will spin up to...

Typically you feel the car decelerate when you let the clutch out in a situation like that, and have an "oh shit" moment, then you put the clutch back in before any real damage is done. Sounds like this is what the OP did so probably no harm done. If it still runs normally, and it doesn't sound like the valves have cozied up all nice with their friends the pistons, I'd say you're in the clear.

Sure it is. Like I said, if you're cruising in sixth at 90mph, then force the gearbox into third at that speed and let out the clutch, your motor will be physically forced up to the speed it would have to spin to hit 90 in third. Namely, way too fast. Bearings get too hot at those speeds, and pistons crash into valves, and havok is wreaked. But instantaneously touching 7k+ then coming back down should not be a big problem.

And it only works when the wheels are on the ground. Yes, I can state this with authority, having driven an Oldsmobile rental car at 80MPH out the front gate of GM's Milford Proving Ground, which unfortunately had a slight incline right at the light, causing a couple seconds of hang time. Not only did I bend a rod, but one of Milford's finest was waiting for me. After the ticket, I had a bit of a hard time starting the car. I drove it straight to the rental place (which was unfortunately by the airport), the banging noise getting louder with every mile. It became unbearable and the car died just as I was driving over the tire shredders at the rental place. I coasted into a spot and went and got me a Pontiac Fiero V6. That was a fun little car - pretty sturdy too. I drove it headlong into a curb doing about 30, and the only really bad thing that happened was the front air dam ripped off.

Of course, that was 25 years ago, and I'm older and wiser now. An excellent driver... :)

Hey I read your thread and I am a Mazda Tech in Chicago IL and about 3 months ago I had a customer come in with a rough idle and random misfire code. The car was running good but it had a very very slight misfire. After replacing the plugs and coils I returned the car back to the customer. About 3 weeks later He brought back his MSP3 with the same code and issue. Long story made short turns out the kid down shifted from 5th to 3rd on the highway "on accident" and the all the valves just kissed the top of the pistons just enought to blow the motor. SO i highly recommend you do a compression check to verify that your motor is in good standing. If you need the compression specs email me
