Guys,

My engine blew on Wednesday. Had it towed to a garage and they are telling me that they can get me a used engine with 50K miles and 90day warranty for $1700 and $1300 installation. Is this a realistic price? I know I can go to a salvage yard and get an engine but I run the risk of that blowing out and having to pay the labor all over again. What should I do? I have a 2002 Protege ES with 120K miles. Thanks.

PS. If you have any recommendations where I can get a good motor in NJ and a good shop to do it, let me know. Thanks.

You could pick a used FS for about half that price. What actually happened with the motor?

You can get one through protegegarage.com for around $1k, then have it shipped to your shop. I used a shop to put in my built engine, and they charged me around $600 to put it in, connect everything, and get it running. With the engine the shop is going to get, most likely I would think they'd be getting it from a salvage yard anyway, and some salvage yards do offer a warranty.. but what if you have the 90 day warranty and the engine goes after the warranty? Either way you are going to have that risk with any engine you buy, best bet is to find one out of a wrecked car or get yours rebuilt with new OEM parts.

You could get the engine from a junkyard and install it yourself. I am going to attempt this very thing as soon as I move into my house. My wife's car, a 2000 Protege, 1.6 kicked it last week. I do have two other cars though, so if I really screw this up, I'm somewhat safe. I'm gonna MacGyver it all the way. Either way, good luck!

I've never done an engine swap, but $3000 altogether with a 90 day warranty seems way too expensive. Take the advice of the other posters - get an engine off ProtegeGarage, and take it to another shop that isn't going to charge $1300 for the install.

buy the motor, ship it to your house. rent a hoist. pay me to come up there and install it, all for less than 3k.

sounds like time for a 2.0 or 2.5 swap!

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up getting the engine online and I am having the shop install it.

Do you guys think someone would be interested in buying a blown motor?

it all depends what actually went wrong with the motor
