Every other section has a thread like this.

It is about time that the Mazda5 has one too!

Post here about all of the things you have done to, and with your Mazda5. Whether it be a wash, new wheels, getting the groceries (wiggle) or just driving around town. There are so many things that Mazda's multi-utility vehicle can do!

I... washed her and cleaned her inside and out. Ooooh shiny!

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b269/nvonde/IMG_2191.jpg

Getting her all ready for road trip #4 this weekend! Almost half of the miles we have put on her have been from road trips. She has always been a very comfortable touring vehicle.

this weekend is the road trip... i will test things out for sure then. im sure it isnt as good as the large antenna... but it isnt terrible... and it looks nice too!

i used my 5 to promote my products in front of one of my retailers. we installed a sony snaplap photo kiosk that slides out of the side door where customers can print out their photos off their digital camera memory cards.

can't do this with a scion xB or a ford transit connect and a regular minivan just wouldn't be cool ;)

Rockin03mp5

We took the dog to the groomers for a nail clipping. She loves the 5 but hates the groomers.
Rear hatch area is just big enough for Chloe to stand in with third row seats dropped flat. She tries to squeeze between the center seats to sit with the people and have an opening window like when she was a regular passenger of our Sable sedan ;).

Back from the dead!

The tire pressure monitor was going off, so I finally decided to do something about it. All tires measured 27-28 psi. The sensors are sensitive. So now they are 35 psi all around.

Also went and got a bunch of groceries, and beer!

Last weekend we went on a grocery run with all 4 kids (6 passengers). Stopped at Lowes for blinds and light bulbs, then went a bought 2 full carts of groceries. Don't ask me where it all goes but we always fit it in there with all the people somewhere.

I call it my clown car. Stuff just keeps going in there somewhere and you can't believe the amount of stuff that comes out when you get home.

Took apart the front and rear consoles looking for prime spots for additional 12v outlets. No joy so far.

OTOH: amazing that so much of this vehicle interior just "snaps" together. Modern assembly design and techniques likely really save time putting these together compared to the old days.

i traded her in... for this.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b269/nvonde/IMG_2953.jpg

lol, just kidding. but it is my 5 replacement for a while.

i took her into the dealership for an oil change and tire rotation. i also test drove a new speed3. i liked it. (black, so it hides the smile :D)

anyways, i get a call while im driving the speed saying there is something with the 5's transmission. so i had to cut my fun short and return to the dealership. they tell me that the transmission is leaking fluid. (forgot exactly where) luckily, it wasnt a lot, and there was still plenty of fluid left so there was no damage. i told them that i didnt see any puddles, but they said that it was all over the outside of the transmission and that it was pooling on the shielding that protects the underside of the engine.

so, now i have this crappy focus for 3 days. they said they have to take the transmission off, and reseal everything. basically it is just some bad seals from the factory. i guess they have seen a few 5's with this problem.

thank god for still being under warranty! this is the second warranty fix now in the 1.6 years. first one for for a squeaky drivers door window. they had to replace the motor on that one. luckily, mazda is giving us the rental for free as well. woot!

What I did to my mazda5 today:

I experimented with my MAZDA5's throttle by wire. googled
for 'throttle by wire calibration'.

I found this thread from a non-mazda forum:
http://caliberowners.co.uk/index.php?topic=1792.0

1. First I followed exactly the procedure in the thread i.e. pedal
all the way to the floor.
-- Result: "Maybe the result is just in my imagination. But
There seems to be a 'change in feel'. Or 'the car
reacts to the gas pedal differently this time'.

2. Then I thought: "What If I press the gas pedal only halfway"?

-- Result: Definitely a 'new feel' is experienced.

I don't know what is the use for it though. But it does make the
mazda5 continously interesting.

The 06-07 came with a clear lense for the gauge cluster...the green isnt hard on the eyes at night...but the 08+ has the white and to tone it down for night time driving they tinted the lens....I noticed the lense when I purchased an 08 cluster to try on the 07 of course it didnt work...but I liked the lense but I had to return it to get my refund back. Today: mounted the "bicycle rack receiver" (that's right, it's not a trailer hitch. No sir!), attached the bikes, and joined friends for some mountain biking and road riding at Creve Coeur Park.

Will the HID do anything to my headlights housing? Its a 35w 6000K system. Any info would be great from someone running this set up or any HID set up

Yes, the spring that holds the bulb to the socket is not the easiest thing to operate. You should not have any problem with the housing since the HID lights runs cooler than the stock halogen. I have been running my HID conversion for almost 10 months now and have not have problems.

My 2010 Sport 5MT got a home-garage oil change today.

New low-profile 20" lift floor jack (to replace the too-small piece o' cr@p I had): $100

Oil and filter (on sale): $17

New oil drain pan (that doesn't spill everywhere when you pour into a container): $7

Knowing the lower engine cover is, in fact, back on; knowing a new, fresh filter was installed; knowing the oil drain plug wasn't stripped and was tightened just right; knowing the exact oil I wanted was filled; knowing it was all cleaned up nice 'n tidy: Priceless!

Kinda expensive for an oil change...but I didn't have a jack that would do the job, and I don't like using ramps (just a preference). I'll get my use out of it.

No real surprises, thanks to all the info posted here. It's nice that these newest ones have a spin-on filter finally. It's even mounted vertically so it's not bad to remove without spilling, after you give it a minute to drain the passage.

One hour, start to finish, including cleaning up and putting everything away.

I used to hate the cartridges, but now I like them because I can inspect the filter much more closely. I'm right there with you on knowing the plug's been tightened correctly. Same with the filter and the cover. I've driven away from a garage before in my MX3 and had the joy of hearing and feeling me rip the cover off of the bottom of the car. Needless to say the a-hole mechanics just shrugged their shoulders like my car is a worthless piece of crap anyway. now the belts get ruined easily and squeal. I hate most mechanics. I can usually tell by the way they engage me whether they're professional and do their job correctly or not. I didn't used to know better.

Drove four passengers and luggage in a 2009 Sport from National Car Rental to our hotel. Surprised to see a 5 among the car rental choices but it was perfect for us, all our luggage, and being in/out of a vehicle for the next few days. About 23k on the clock, seems pretty sound/tight for being a rental & all.

***Update 4/30*** So we spent a week with the rental 5 in Orlando, it worked really well for us. I don't travel as I used to (4-5x per month) so I'm less aware of rental car fleets than I once was. But I saw a bunch of rental 5's coming/going from our hotel. Actually: I thought the automatic in this 2009 did a fairly decent job, I hadn't driven an 5AT in a while and not since putting the first 5k on my 5MT. It kicked down easily, shifted smoothly, had a nice surge from a standstill. My passengers loved the sliding doors, high seats, good legroom, and visibility. We did a bunch of around town stuff and got in a run over to RonJon / Cocoa Beach also. Maybe they'll sell a few after folks have them as rentals, or have already.

I will try it next time I need to purchase, but it might be a while. I stocked up on it when the Strauss auto by me closed down. I will try the low gloss for the very top of the dash to cut back on glare though.

Also I cried looking at the back bumper of my 5 today. I think it scratches if you look at it too long. Is it me or does this paint scratch like crazy?! I think the bumper guard I use does more damage than if I didn't bother! Time to go buff a little.............

I don't use the bumper guard. I think it gives false sense of protection. The groceries and cargo will still scratch the guard and the bumpair surface that's not covered by the guard.

We just 'try our best' not to drag groceries over the bumper when unloading.
I have scratches on the bumper. But not much. It still looks good after cleaning and then waxing.

Also if you had the guard installed, and you decide to remove it, you will have a 'guard' mark area , surrounded by scratches.

Wow. Just move to place where people are smart enough to not destroy your parked car. Just kidding. Man that sucks that you have to worry about that crap. If someone hits your car here they leave a note with their phone number usually. I've even been paged in the grocery store to be told that my F150 with 290,000 miles on it has a scuff on a rusted bumper because someone hit it and wanted to exchange insurance info. I just laughed and said no thanks.

Dude, I had the car for 3 weeks when my neighbor dug his license plate screws into the rear bumper squeezing his conversion van into a spot. Maybe if he didn't leave the empty carrier on the trailer hitch that adds 3 feet to the behemoth, he could park it! Why a family of 4 needs a van that size is beyond me, and why it needs extra cargo room is even more of a mystery. My next house will have a private driveway and a 2 car garage for sure. Right now I'm looking to repair whatever scuffs are on there and going for a clear film protectant too. Its the one thing about living in the city I cant stand, to some people a car is an appliance and they park by feel.

I'm one block from the 'downtown' area that has parking meters and marked spots. I WISH they extended that to my block; that way, I can buy a parking sticker and marked spots will maximize available spots.
it will also keep all the illegals from leaving all their cars all over the place; I mean, one apartment has like 10 different people who cycle in and out every few days w/ 6-7 different cars.

Today I:
Modified the drivers seat bottom to have more of a tilt to it.
Installed a panoramic mirror to watch the kids in the back without turning.
Cut down the plastic panel next to the accelerator pedal so I dont get my foot caught under the brake pedal.
Washed it, so it looks purty :)

Do you have more info on your driver side seat modification? I have pretty long legs and would like a little more support by tilting the front of the seat upwards.

Replaced motor mount #3 and the vibrations are gone...I read somewhere that the factory one was filled with liquid and that explained the dried up liquid underneath the motor mount, when I took it off it was bone dried inside..no wonder it shook like a mofo. Anyways happy again with my 5!

Replace the MS3 front springs with Progress springs. Liked the combination with the drop of the MS3 rear springs.

Took me close to 3 hrs to make the install. I'm happy with the Progress and MS3 spring combi, and I didn't need to install camber link. I will have to wait 2 weeks for the springs to settle before alignment.

I test fit the Advans on the 5 today. The specs are 18x8.5 +45 235/40/18 and I needed to know if they fit. The rear sits perfectly flush but the front pokes about a half inch. I'm going with 18x9 Advans on the MS3 so these will eventually go on the 5 permanently once I buy the second set.

These pics should at least give people some insight as to what specs to choose in the future.

Gave my 5 its 7500-mile service. Geez, that came up fast!

Some notes:

1. First tire rotation, no particular problems noted. Very happy to find the lugs properly torqued, not air-wrenched into far-too-tightness.

2. Dang, these stock wheels/tires are heavy! Alloy or not. Sheesh, where's the linament?

3. Took photos of my 5 in the garage, on jackstands, have oil/filter receipt, photo of odometer "for the record".

4. Nice removing the filter this time, since the last guy who installed it (me!) didn't put it on over-tight.

Ah, the joys of self-maintenance!

I applied the first batch of tint myself...then I re-read the local laws on tinting and had to strip it off before I got caught. I've got a brand new batch of Llumar ATR 35% acquired from a local shop that's going on tonight unless it really rains. I find the 5 easy to tint yourself. There's no deep pockets to reach into. The rear window is a bit of a pain since you have to do it in strips or know how to use a heat gun.

I've DIY before, but before the pre-cut kits, I agree, all of the windows look fairly easy to do/apply, relatively flat glass w/o much curve, the windows in the 4 doors will be the biggest issue due to getting it positioned along the edges. One site I visited suggested taking the weather striping out on the roll down windows, but not sure if I want to tackle that part, sure it would be easier, but how difficult the removal and re-install of the weather strips is something unknown to me. GL on your install.

DO NOT drive a screwdriver through the housing that holds the filter. You may try that with a spin-on canister filter, but not with the open filter on most Mazda5's. Check the threads. Lots of info posted about changing the filter and who sells the proper wrench.

If you are pulling out of a sidestreet and making a sharp turn onto the main street, its really easy to spin the inside front wheel. I think its from the body roll and a rear swaybar would help that a lot! I spun it really bad the other day and the wife just gave me the eyebrow lol

No explosion in my face and no airbag warning lights. I am claiming a fully successful transplant.

That said, I used the existing Mazda5 airbag and once I figured out that the connectors disconnect from the airbag module, rather than at the column like the steering wheel controls it was smooth sailing.

[QUOTE=coolmazda5;5395732]I figured out that the steering wheel control connectors disconnect at the column.

How do the controls work? Are they hard wired to the radio or do they transmit like an actual remote control? I know someone who used a programmable home remote to learn the codes from his steering wheel buttons so I know that some OEM's use that system. What I'm getting at is buying another set of buttons and installing in the rear console for rear audio control.(crazy)

Edit: Answered my own question, they are hardwired through the clockspring. I think you would just need to splice the wires behind the radio and the second set would work, just not sure what would happen if they were used at the same time. I dont think it would bother the radio, probably no different than hitting 2 buttons at once and I dont think it would happen often if at all anyway. Now its just a matter of how to make it look good :)

I used the 5 to move a bunch of stuff into the new house. the funnest one was moving the 79'' long futon. (we didnt have a bed moved, and were already sick of the air mattress)

had to move the front passenger seat up most of the way, but it fit.

you can see that i used the seat belt to prevent it from moving into the driver!

so, after moving, i noticed the drivers side low beam was out. go go warranty!

got the oil changed and the bulb replaced. all set now.

I took a shower in my 5. I opened the sunroof after rinsing off the dirty work from the birds the night before. Word to the wise: If the car is sitting with the nose uphill and you rinse it off, take a REALLY good look at how much water is on the sunroof BEFORE you open it. I didn't know it could hold that much water and never expected it all to run in either! First car with a tilt and slide roof btw :)

The TPMS dashboard light came for the 2nd time in almost 3 years. One of the front tires was low, I have the feeling it has a nail or so, Pumped some air, let's see. Oh, and in more interesting news, took the kids to the Crayola factory in Easton PA, they had a good time, along with the farmer's market across the street and their salsa contest :)

Swapped the crappy plastic steering wheel with a OEM Leather Mazda 3 wheel from a salvage company on EBAY. Best $35 and 15 minutes I've spent.

hey, this is exactly what i'm doing! but you got a better deal than i... i got my mazda5 leather OEM wheel for $50 on flea bay. i'm still waiting for it to arrive. i guess i'll use the opportunity to also replace the OEM headlight/turn signal switch with the fog light version i just purchased along with the OEM fog light kit.

so far i've installed the OEM roof rack, bumper step plate and soft cargo liner.

Picked up the car up on Wednesday, so far I've only installed our toddler's car seat and decent floor mat - anyone want the OEM ones? I've the hard trunk liner on the way from the UK. No big plans, it is after all the wife's daily driver and brandy new!

Thanks! yeah I know ( about the housing) I'm just too chicken shit to bake them.

While in that parking garage I swear there were three 5's already there when I got there...I actually saw a Grand Touring ( i believe it was the dark grey) with the darker tail lights...I really like those. and when I was leaving ...there was a black 08+ one with Jersey plates right in front of the place with a mazda 6 following it
