Hey guys,
My wifes 99 protege 1.8 has sounded pretty much like a diesel for as long as I can remember. It has the sound of marbles being rolled around in the engine. I recently replaced the timing belt after it snapped and keep the oil changed regularly. I thought maybe it was running really lean but this is really bad.

The spark plugs were a little white when I changed them maybe 3000 miles ago, which means it was running a little lean. Its to a point now though where it sounds really really bad and I need to know what it is.

The sound seems to definitely be coming from the top or side of the motor on the accessory side. Thanks in advance.

I would definitely have someone check out the valves, which may need to be adjusted. The only way to know for sure would be to pop the valve cover.

it is the timing belt tensioner. it is probably a broken spring causing it to tear apart the belt. its that way on mine.

if it is the tensioner than it is not hard to replace especially if you did the timing belt yourself.

it's prolly the water pump. often when you hear the sound of marbles, it's the bearings that went bad for the pump.

check your valve lash, if you wait to long you will wear out your cams. Also is it low on oil?
