smoke coming out of my exhaust

So yesterday I got my oil change at my local mazda dealership. When I arrive at my friends house and let my car Idle for a bit then I rev my engine a little bit smoke comes out but it has this wierd smell too it I have never smelled before... Im probably jsut dumb but it does it every time I let it idle for a bit...

What mods do you have?

How long was it idling? Could have just been excess gas in the exhaust with some condensation.

If not then it could be the smoking turbo, but thats usually a bit more often than just when you hit the gas from idle.

I've seen a turbo smoke, let it idle for 10-15min and it was billowing out clouds of smoke so youd know if the seals were bad. If your running a catless dp it could just be fumes not being burned up and these cars run pig rich so smoke isnt uncommon. Or i've seen techs spill the oil filling it up and its burning off the hot engine parts but that woudlnt explain the smoke out the back.

Might see if they overfilled the crankcase. This might cause excess windage and buildup crank case pressure and vapors in the PCV system causing smoking at startup and idle for a while. I have a car that does exactly that, but it's not a MS3 and it's not forced induction, but still.....

My seals are bad on my turbo its smoke every now and then you mite have the same problem.

Found out what it was.. the person who did my oil put too much oil in! but thanks for the input guys.. I learned something today!

Might see if they overfilled the crankcase.

I guess even a squirrel gets a nut now and then.

Dude, you're one of the lucky one's.....mines been sitting at the dealer for over two weeks now waiting for Mazda to ship a frakkin' turbo to be replaced.(rant)

My friend was drivng my car and I was behind in his car an I saw black smoke poof out and it smelled odd. I have no idea what it is from, I'm bare stock too

car has a defective pcv system - it causes the oil seals in the turbo to go bad it's an extremely common issue in a large number of cars the official service bulletin is out there to look at on some of the other forums (mazda is coming out with a pcv fix)- if the car smokes after a good long idle with the ac on it's a good possibility you've got this issue - modding the exhaust will only make the problem worse - if you're stock and you're under warranty take it to a dealer and show them

Could you PLEASE point me to the "offical service bulletin"? I have this problem and want it fixed ASAP.

if you are under warranty (no major mods)and can duplicate the smoking for a dealer and produce you oil change records right now they will most likely give you a new turbo - the pcv system fix is supposed to be out from Mazda soon

I bought the car used and do not have the full service records. Just a couple oil changes. So I am screwed??? (notcool)

If you bought it from a mazda dealer, and you have your receipts since then, your fine. Otherwise? not sure.

so many variables can be left up to the decision of the dealer and the Mazda corp. folks - if you are stock and under warranty your best bet is to just go to the dealer (hopefully one with a good rep.) and explain the whole story and show them what the car is doing

That shows the difference in dealers. I took mine in for an oil change, explained the problem to the service guy and he claimed ignorance. "No I have never heard of that problem". Looks like I'll probably be screwed but we'll see. There are a very, very, very, very, very select few in the auto sales/service industry who actually do the right thing when called upon. Looks like it's lottery time.

my service manager didn't know anything about the issue either - i wrote up a big explanation, gave it to him, explained the whole thing, they checked it out, took pictures, sent them to mazda, and got back to me in a couple weeks about getting a new turbo

I plan on taking video of it. My phone takes great video. When I do I will be taking it to the dealer again. The problem is not easily recreated but hopefully the video will suffice.
