So I have a 1.6L 99 Protege with an automatic tranny.
I was wondering what my first mod should be. I am debating between a CAI or a front strut bar. Maybe you guys know what would be best. Eventually I will get both, but I want your guys opinion on what I should get FIRST.
Thanks for your time.

Welcome. Have you done all the basics first? Before you start doing any mods, no matter what kind of car it is, it should be in tip top running condition first. How many miles are you at?

150k km
I have maintained the car since I received it a couple months ago. I have made sure all the fluids are good and topped off. Tires are good, brakes are new. Engine runs very smooth.
But maybe I missed something.

Try a intake manifold from a 626 I'm going to put one on mine I heard it's the way to go unless you want something custom.
Second instead of a CAI try this free HP is always good, I'm planning to do both of these mods to my 00 1.8 Protege.
Good luck!

You won't notice a huge difference with the intake on the 1.6L engine. I'm not 100% sure about the strut bar specifically but these cars respond to handling mods very well so you would probably notice it more.

Buy what you want, there really is no 'best' first mod. It all depends how much you want to mod in the end too. If you want better handling, start with the suspension. If you want the car to sound better, start with the intake or exhaust somewhere. If you want more power, there's lots of parts you can look into.

Pull that 1.6L and put in a 2L...swap the tranny while you're at it.

Keep the 1.6 and go turbo.

I have a 1.6 w/turbo on my Miata...its a huge addition to a Miata...not so much a sedan with a 1.6'er.

Really? The 1.6 is supposed to be a far more boost happy engine than the FS-DE.

Mind you it isn't that big of a sedan....
But that's besides the point, I am going to keep it a 1.6L maybe swap in manual tranny. I think this will be a NA engine for now. When (if) I get a was of cash, I will turbo.

Same here but I'll never go turbo on my 00. I'll be shooting for around 140 WHP, now the suspension will get a re-do with 140 & the suspension worked over the car will be a blast. From the factory the car is fun was fun to drive so with the mods I'm planning it will be even more so.

YOu guys are telling him to buy a turbo, when he's just starting his modding, and is obviously only interested in low budget mods right now...........way to help the community.

I take everything with a grain of salt. Don't worry.
I have decided on:
AEM RAM intake
OBX Exhuast Headers
Cat Back Exhaust
New Intake Manifold
Strut Bar
Coil overs and Shocks.
Cosmetic mods will be in there randomly (Tires and rims first).

Were just giving out ideas for the future, these are all things to consider after all.
I see you're planning on getting the AEM SRI, would you happen to know if the 1.6L one is the same as the 2.0L one?

1.6L is not the same as 2.0L. I know for the stock system, 1.8L is the same as 2.0L. Believe me I made the mistake of trying to get a stock 1.8 air intake into a 1.6. about 10 minutes of scratching my head and feeling stupid.
With the SRI I dont think the 1.6L and 2.0L are the same, the MAF is in a different location. It may fit if you modified it, but you might as well get the 2.0L. I believe (Don't quote me) the 1.8L and 2.0L parts are cheaper than 1.6L.
