Buick has announced they will be adding the 2.4-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine to the upcoming 2010 LaCrosse.

Engineered to provide a balanced mix of fuel efficiency and performance, the direct-injected 2.4-liter Ecotec boasts 182 horsepower (136 kW) and 172 lb-ft (233 Nm) of torque. More importantly, the engine is expected to return 20 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. For comparison, the LaCrosse's 255 hp 3.0-liter V6 and 280 hp 3.6-liter V6 average an estimated 17 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

According to GM's vice chairman of Global Product Development, Tom Stephens, "Direct injection is a key component of GM's ongoing strategy to use advanced propulsion technology to help us deliver more fuel-efficient cars today and in the future."

Look for the 2.4-liter Buick LaCrosse to be offered "later this year" with a base price slightly below the 3.0-liter LaCrosse's MSRP of $27,085.

Looks kinda like the 2010 Camrys

The interiour looks like a wood grain spaceship, but I like the HUD.

That thing will be a dog in a car that size. No thanks. I'd take either V6 option and trade a small mpg penalty for the car actually moving when I hit the gas pedal.

0-60 in....NEVAR!!!!!!

I think the turbo'd ecotec would have been a better choice or Buick should bump the HP up to 200hp just to be competitive with every other midsizer 4 banger on the market.

Yeah the Turbo'd version is the one in the US version of the Ariel Atom isn't it??

I think so. It is the same engine that the Cobalt SS, Sky Redline, Solstice GXP, and Saab 9 3 have.

Downsize the engine, slap a turbo on it and call it GMboost and squeeze 32-34mpg outta it with 200hp and you'll be golden :P

also...this is no worse than BMW and MB researcing Geo Metro-esque 3pots

It makes no sense that they would not use the ecotec turbo motor. None at all.

Only way it would make sense is if that thing had all sorts of weight reduction done to it. Anyone know how much this thing weighs?

2009 V6 Buick LaCrosse = 3495lbs

so +/- a couple hundred pounds

So let;s see here: 182 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque moving 3495lbs, plus or minus 1 or 2 hundreds pounds since it's a lighter motor. No thanks.

2010 Camry LE
Curb Weight: 3307 lbs
Base Engine Size: 2.4 liters
Horsepower: 169 hp

19.56 lbs per hp

LaCrosse is 18.65 lbs per hp at 3395 lbs.

They've got the Camry beat, it's got available AWD and is MUCH better looking.

Pretty much everything looks better than the camry :P lol

That being said, Buick is more in line with lexus here mate...

Se let's compare to the Lexus Camry err i mean IS250

2.5L V6 204hp/185ftlb
weight- 3651lbs

lb/hp = 17.9

So it's even pretty close to that... and is only down 13ftlb of torque over the IS...

as a side note:

IS350-

3.5L V6
306hp/277ftlb
Weight: 3527lbs

lb/hp = 11.53 0.o

BMW 328iX AWD-

3.0L V6
230hp/200ftlb
Weight: 3627lb

lb/hp - 15.77

I would not compare this car to either a IS or 3 series.

anyone think this is NOT going to sell?

americans don't like 4 bangers, especially the buick demographic
people who buy buicks are old farts with money anyway... you think they can't afford the V6 engine and the gas?

another one of those poorly executed ideas GM... bravo!

Oh that's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it would way over 4,000 pounds! That I4 will create sufficient pull. Not a bad remodel honestly, I would just go with the Malibu if I were in the market for a family sedan.

You're right.
Compare it to a Lexus ES or a Lincoln MKZ, not an IS and a 3 series.

True, especially if it is well geared it can haul you around with no issues (a Mazda5 is around 3500lbs and has only 153hp, damn rat's engine :D), but the problem is the current Buick's target market, I see difficult for GM to convince potential buyers that a 4 cyl mid-size sedan is a good choice (dunno)...
