im gentle and at times aggressive. never redlined never downshifted out of gear range.

its all electronically controlled man. You making it shift at higher rpms is really no different then you flooring it and it shifting at higher rpms

It won't let you downshift if you are going too fast for that gear. The current gear display just blinks if you try. As least that's how it worked in my CX-7.

Use it for downshifting when passing on the highway.

the only differences are:
you don't have the pause between when you hit it and when it downshifts.... if you tell it to downshift before, when you mash it, its ready.

Also, you can rev it higher without being all the way in the gas without upshifting... not that this serves a purpose, just sayin you CAN.

It's the same as stepping on your gas in D and making it shift that way. But if downshift more and engine brake a lot it just puts more wear on your transmission and creates more heat. Just don't do it every time you drive and abuse it always.
