View Full Version : Trans fluid change... now LSD chatter

I changed my trans fluid yesterday. I used Amsoil full synthetic GL-4 75W-90 Manual Transmission Fluid. Now when I get in it for the first few sharp turns I make when the trans is cold I hear some groaning and slight chatter from the limited slip differential. I noticed the factory oil smelled like it had Ford motorsports friction modifier(LSD additive) in it (that stuff has a REALLY distinctive smell, once you smell it once you never forget it). I know everyone has been using redline MT90 (I couldn't get it at short notice, and I have used Amsoil in other stuff with excellent results)... but has anyone been adding any sort of friction modifier or LSD additive in the transmission?

Just swapped my tranny oil to MT-90 no additives and no noise. Haven't noticed any additional noise after the change... (uhm)

Some people are using RP Max-Gear 75W90 which does contain friction modifiers.

Has anyone used royal purple synchromax?

You should try adding a bottle of Amsoil Slip Lock

Should just never change the tranny fluid.

I noticed some chatter after changing to MT-90. Not to bad, but enough to be irritating. Added about 4 oz of modifier and no more noise.

That would be a disaster.
Synchomax is a replacement for ATF.

Just chucked in 4 oz of Ford friction modifier, as the PO put in Redline MT-90 and left me with the noise. Noise now gone, even shifts a touch smoother.

Now, on cone-style diffs, noise = wear, period. These items are also non-rebuildable, unlike a plate limited slip. So you're aiming at replacement not repair, down the road, likely big $$$.

I don't care about noise and chatter on my 5.0 drag car but not on my DD, thanks.

Sorry, it was Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube GL-4 75W-90(part number MTG-01). After thinking about it for the past few days, I really don't want to try mixing any additives with it. I don't mind trying out homebrew fluid mixes in my DSM with the $30 junkyard transmission, but the transmission in this car costs more than my whole DSM does.

I couldn't find it using the search on this site... but I found this thread searching google.... http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123728011

I'm going to try some of the Ford XT-M5-QS. I've heard the best results from people using that. It's also probably what came in the car, or damn close to it.
