View Full Version : Stock Headunit being a PITA, HELP please!

ok so I have had my share of small quarks with the head unit, I really like the stock one, and DO NOT WANT TO GET RID OF IT... just so I am clear and don't have a bunch of people just telling me to get rid of it.
but anyways, the stock head unit is stuck in the position that it would usually be in when putting in a new cd, but there is already a cd in there, and I can not get power or turn on the deck from remote or manually. Usually when this happens or anything else like this, I just reset the battery by taking off the positive terminal for a little while, this didn't work, tried it several times.
Also when I take the faceplate off, the deck returns to the position as if it would be when it is on and playing, (w/o the faceplate though) and when I put the faceplate back on, it goes back to the "cd" position a few sec later, and I can't get any power or press any of the buttons on it before it switches positions (I press them, but no power for any button, or remote that works)
Recidently I put in my HIDs because the battery died since I have not been driving the car much just yet, (1 more week and I can, finally) but one of the ballasts on the HIDs were damaged in my last accident and the ground wire I believe was torn out, or just loose inside, and I can't fix it, (I am buying a new one now) but is this something that could have damaged the head unit somehow because of the ballast not having a proper connection to the ground wire, also this happened after I charged the battery completely, which I wouldn't think would affect it, but never know.
thanks for the help, I really want to get this fixed it is bugging me, also does the head unit have a fuse or something anywhere?
sounds like its dead. mine did the same thing. You can find a used one if you wanna keep it, but it will break 2. I wanted to keep the stock unit, then 2 months after buying a used one it died. I now have a pioneer and love it

damn, I really hope it is not dead, I still have mine from my old car, I was going to give it to my dad because he wanted the Sirius radio hook up that I had, and I have an old Pioneer one laying around too
anyone else have any suggestions or anything? I want to try everything before I chalk it up for dead, depending on the prices I might just buy a used one from here..
also anyone have any idea of why they die like that, I am guessing they are very sensitive to electric shocks or whatnot?

With the new features newer headunits have, the Kenwood is a dinosaur now. The Kenwood breaks because the data cable for the hideaway face plate wears and the ribbon circuit breaks.
I put a Pioneer DEH-P7100BT (http://***********************/mazdaspeed10.htm) and brought the car up to date with 2009 technology.

thanks Jdm Sam, and ya I know it's really old, but it's weird because the cable for the faceplate is still in tact, the only thing I did with it was charge the battery, which makes me think there is something fried in there, I just wanted to give the head unit another shot before replacing it
if anyone has any ideas on what the problem could be or how it broke so it doesn't happen again that would be great, I already bought a used one from the FS forums, so I can give the other one to my dad, but if this one breaks than I will replace it, I'll have to sell my old Pinoneer too because that one is older than the kenwood lol, still works but I like new stuff haha

Well after I read this yesterday mine started acting up. Mine is not a severe as yours but my display stopped working. I'm sure it's just the ribbon that's causing the problem but it looks like it's time for a new radio. Double DIN here we come!

positive wipes out all your settings, neg. I think keeps your settings, I just do which ever, I should start doing the neg. because I got sparks last time when it touched the polished metal of the WR coolant can(boom08)

if you do decide to replace it with something new, the alpine ida-x100 i just put in the vw is pretty baller. If my kenwood totally dies on me that will be its replacement.

hmm, I was looking for that but couldn't find it, that is why I tried resetting it by disconnecting the battery, but didn't work, did you try the battery before you got it working? or did you just go straight to resetting it with the button, I will have to give that a shot when I install it in my dad's car, would be nice if it was still working, would have an extra.. thanks for the help
but I did replace it, with my old one from my other car, and just bought a used stock deck from someone on here for my dad to use, so he can use the serious radio hookup I have, that I don't really want.

I have a kenwood that is a little newer than the stock unit but still has the hideaway face thing. That reset button is the best, haha. I think my radio get stuck in some random position every couple days.

Yup, I was just getting ready to say "Hit the reset button on the face". I *think* it's a white-ish little button that's recessed.
Our headunit did the same thing a few months after we bought the car brand new. On the way to the dealer I said "What's this?" and pushed it in with a pen. Fixed it and it worked perfectly. Ours worked fine for another 5 years and it finally crapped out last year. Not bad for the luck everyone else has had with them. Luckily, we had a spare unit and it's been working fine ever since.
