Oil Fliter Conversion Kit

Like the title says, Im almost to the point for an oil change and was curious, is the filter conversion kit worth it? I know a few of you on here have this and I wanted to hear your impressions and thoughts.

From what I read on the PG website, I don't have to deal with that damn small O ring if I upgrade to this and for me, that is worth it, because that is a pain.

I was gonna go this route also and my buddy who is a ferarri mechanic told me tha BMW has been running this type of setup for a really long time and that the reason y they are running this setup is cause it actually filters better than a normal screw on filter. Sooooooo long story short I just changed my oil and I decided that it's not that bad and I will contine to do the canster setup

I had one for a short while and it didn't seal up right. I ended up sending it back. Once you get used to the stock one, it can be just as easy as a regular filter change. I actually prefer the stock one now that I've gotten used to it.

The only part I miss is having the port for an external pressure gauge, but I can get that at other places anyway.

and yes, you won't have to fiddle with the allen, and the two o rings

When I had my M3 it had the canister, and I hated it. If you didn't get the crush ring just right it would leak. I got the spin on cause the previous owner of my MS3 put it on, I intend to keep it.

Sure thats what you say before the stupid plastic thing gets a crack in it and sprews all your oil all over the place. The gf 6i also got trashed because the thing got a small crack in it towards the end of her oil change. Needless to say I am glad I checked her oil at a gas station... Didn't even read on the dipstick!!! Thankfully It was caught before it did any real damage to the motor. That little plastic part is a dealer only item and was 40 bucks for it as well! In the end it ended up costing me 280 bucks due to a crack in it!! 40 bucks for the part, forget how much for the oil change and tow!

The oil change wasnt that bad anyways becuase she was about due for one anyays. The motor still runs strong and doesnt burn any oil thank god!

you need coolant if you remove the hoses from the coolant unit on top of the filter conversion. its an easy install though. took me like 30 mins.

remove the four bolts after you drain your oil...pull down the old filter setup...match up the new gasket or old...w/e you want to do theyre the same thing...put the new one on and bolt it up. thats it. super easy. and im sorry the difference in the cartridge filter to a fram spin on is garbage if you change your oil at 5000 miles.

Thanks, I figured as much that it would be pretty straight forward but beings that I dont touch the gf's car due to the crap cart. filter setup, I'm not 100% where everything is at.

I used gasket maker and the gasket. In addition, I used some plumber's tape on the threads. With the spin-on and Fumoto valve, oil changes are eeeeeeeeeezy...

I just did this last week; see how-to. In the end, totally wirth it IMHO. I just took old one off, put new one on its place. I didn't use pipe-thread, just he-manned the four bolts and the top 15mm bolt, and the canister. Used oil on teh seal. No leaks. Easy, easy down the road, esp. with my kwik-valve. Plus you have more "performance" filter options with the spin-on filters, no?

Can someone post a long to a spin-on that adds, like, 5 HP at the wheel? ;)

IT IS A KNOWN FACT THAT THE PIECE OF SHIT PAPER FILTER IS EXTREMELY INEFFICIENT AT FILTERING OIL..WHY YOU ASK?...THE PAPER FILTER IS LEFT TO SOAK IN THE OIL WHEN YOU SHUT THE CAR OFF AND WHEN THE PAPER FILTER SITS IN THIS DIRTY OIL IT DOES A GREAT JOB AT SERIOUSLY DEGRADING THE FILTER ITSELF CAUSING THE FILTER TO OVER A NOT SO LONG PERIOD OF TIME TO NOT FILTER SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A spin on filter is made up of much better material and last much longer.

mazda[sic] and the few other car manufacturers chose to go the cheap route and use the cartridge filter..just like they chose to go with such an inefficient TMIC....whatever saves them money!!!

Well, EVERY filter-spin on or not-"soaks in the oil" when you shut the car off. You want the filter to be full of oil so that oil pressure builds up quickly at start up. Three of my cars(the MS3, X3, and 318ti) as well as my Speed Triple use cartridge filters and I have yet to see a UOA-mine or that of anyone else-that would indicate that cartridge filters are inferior to spin on filters with regards to filtration efficiency or filter medium longevity. I run @8,000 mile OCIs in my BMWs and every time that I've removed a filter cartridge it has looked fine. The move to cartridge filters has been due to the fact that it's easier to squeeze the waste oil from the filter cartridges, but filter efficiency has not been sacrificed. And, when the assembly is mounted under the hood-as it is on all modern BMWs-oil changes are a breeze.

Nope just the metal gasket. No oil leaks and been on for 5k miles

I just used a few dabs to keep the metal gasket in place while I put it all back together.

i held the gasket in place while a fridne screwed the first bolt in then it was a matter of finishing up. easy as pie.

and i think the filtering of oil between the two (spin on, cartridge) is so insufficient if you purchase a good spin on (ie decent grade fram or better sport brand) argueing a point is usless. change your oil every 5k with sytec your filter will puill out enough contaminents and still be fine by the time you pull it and replace it anyway. either one will work fine...just a matter of me liking the spin on better. literally, spin off, spin on....thanks mr miagee. the cartridge filter is a hastle and the difficutly of reaching this filter is none. its in such an easy spot that the location also doesnt matter

Do you honestly believe the filter material is different? Why would the filter media be different from cartridge to spin-on?

OK, I haven't posted in a long time but as now is the time to change my oil, I think i am going to go the spin on route. Ill let you guys know
